Silicon Inlets - 12 hour fitting needed?

I just received my Masata silicon inlets today and was looking for quotes to fit them - most of them quoted me in the 12 hour range.

Has anyone had experience fitting them and does it normally take that long?

Just a bit shocked that it would take so long, but perhaps I am missing something.

I did mine in around 4hrs fighting with them. 12hrs? I could probably have the entire motor out in less time than that.

Do you have stock turbos? If so....wait to do inlets until you upgrade the turbos, they are a waste of time with the stock ones.....and it will be much easier to get the inlets in if you are already working on replacing the turbos.

It sounds like they are using all the lube they saved on you for the inlet

no one will charge you 4hrs for the job, even if they can do it in 4. You are probably looking at an 8 hr bill.

12 seems excessive…I would do it yourself. It's not complicated just a pain in the ass.

Use some dish soap on the rear inlets and it'll slip right in. I've only experienced installing silicone relocated inlets twice and it wasn't so bad so I can't imagine oem location inlets being any more annoying, but I have been a Diesel Mechanic for over 10 years so my tool use experience is on a different level. If you take your time it's possible to get it done and it will be a fun cursing weekend job…. I even swapped out my twin turbos with the subframe in place.

+1

it takes 4 hours, but most mechanics charge around 8 hours for this job

Yeah stock turbos on, so I got the 1.75" inlets. Not much gains or benefits upgrading the inlets in your experience if I am on stock turbos?

4 hours!! Feel like I am getting scammed think it's time for me to start haggling with them too Changing both together probably makes sense, might even save up a bit on fitting since they are in the same area I reckon.

Does sound like a fun job indeed, only problem is I literally have ZERO experience with fitting anything so I probably would want to start off with something simpler like a mirror cover

Well the good thing about owning a 335i is that it forces you to learn how to work on cars....these things need constant maintenance and attention.

Personally, when I installed VRSF 1.75 on stock turbos, JB4 with BEF, I did hear the turbos more, and it did spool quicker. This is all by feel and I have no written data.

I would disagree, I think this is a pretty decent first job. It will teach you how difficult things can be on this chassis and you don't have to worry about it breaking anything or installing something wrong. It's very straightforward, take old ones out, put new ones in.

I wish I had thought about lubing up the inlets when i did the install. I thought about it for a half second but was concerned i wouldn't be able to grip them well enough for the pullings....

I had the same thoughts when I did the water pump and hoses on a jackstand. Then I put some on and went "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THATS SO MUCH EASIER"

When I did mine I tied a heavy piece of electrical wire around the end of the rear inlet.......got under the car and just pulled it down behind the motor. Not super easy, but much easier than trying to push that inlet back down behind the block.

You can also remove the intake manifold and it will help with getting the rear inlet on. Takes only 15 minutes or so to remove the intake manifold.

Did mine last spring. I cussed and fussed, walked away from it, came back to it cussed and fussed some more. Lube is definitely your friend as well as YouTube videos showing you some of the simple tricks to make it easier. 12hrs by most shops will cost you $800, which is about the cost for a decent set of down pipes, front mount intercooler, charge pipe and blow off valve. Add another $400, get a fuel pump upgrade with an MHD stage 2 plus tune along with a cheap Walmart tablet for $39.99. You're all set !

$66/hr?? I don't know any shops that have a rate that low. Most are $100-$125/hr.

But I agree.....paying for inlets (including install) is a waste of money on stock turbos. Spend the money on some better mods.

Has anyone even asked what stage OP is at? FBO already or still needing other mods?

I mean my dp's alone were more than $800 so I'd never say anyone has a blanket case. I spent the $300 for inlets on my stocks and did the install myself, at 110k miles they will only help them out to squeeze the life outta them (I'm not street racing here) and have no other power mods left to do either. Ya the install sucked but hey, that's what I do once every 6 months or so, I usually save a few mods and do them together, like vacuum lines and fluid changes along with. Not a waste of time or money for me.
