Crazy oil leak...where?!
Hi everyone I'm new here. To get to the point I have a 2007 335i coupe AT with 80k. The other day after warming up my car I noticed there was a huge puddle of oil under my car. I threw it up on jacks to take a look and there is nothing that I'm familiar with. It seems like oil was leaking from all over. I popped the hood and everything was dry so it couldn't if been my oil cap. I've posted some pictures below. Any help is appreciated and sorry if this is kind of all over the place. Thanks
First pic is the oil filter housing and the rest is like the back of oil pan. Also what is that black cap? Thanks again |

could be the oil pan gasket... could be the rear main seal... could be one of the turbo oil lines...

I don't have too much experience which these engines (bought my first bmw in november), but here are some guesses:
Rear Main Seal Oil Lines Running To Turbos Oil Pan

My 6mt had similar leak. Ended up being the rear turbo inlet hose had seperated a bit from where it connects to the turbo and oil was gathering at the connection point, would gather and drip down across where trans meets the engine and down the underside of trans.
Check rear turbo inlet pipe connection first, since it's free.

Breather
There is a breather valve in the rear , on top of the engine. If it does not work, it will kick oil out the back side of the engine. Part is about $35.00. You can tell if it is that because your oil, if you lift the oil fill cap, will look yellow sort of bubbly (oxidized).
If not, it could be a rear main seal. Good luck on that one. Cost is around $1100 -$1500.00 to fix. Unless you can do it on your own, which unless your are very good mechanic with a lift, that's not gonna happen. You have to drop the sub frame to get to it. It also could be the back side of the valve cover. Take a mirror with an led light on it and look behind the engine just below the cover. You may or may not be able to do this. There are a few DIY vids and pictures out there on this one. It is sort of complicated. I would recommend taking pictures of what it looked like Before you took all those pieces off. A lot of people say the oil pan, to be honest the oil pan gasket is not likely. They very rarely leak on a BMW 3 series. |

Thanks for all the quick reply guys. I'm really hoping it's just the oil line or something because I did just notice the front turbo is pretty soaked with oil. I'll check up on again when it get a tad bit warmer (Minnesota winters). Thanks again. I'll keep you guys updated

Hey, sorry for the late reply. I couldn't figure what was the problem so I took it in to a local shop and it looks to be valve cover gasket and oil filter gasket. Parts are cheap but damnnnn labor is crazy expensive.

Update...So I took my car back in the shop because there is still a small oil leak. The guy at the shop told me there is a small leak coming from a bolt that goes into the block by the turbos. Does any one by chance know what this bolt might be? I haven't had time to go under and take pics but thought I'd might ask. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
