Oh I had a question as well:

Do I need to unmarry (how is that done?) the OFT before updating the ROM?

Good question, I would also like to know as I am about to do this.

I can only assume that you don't have to unmarry as your VIN remains the same?

You unmarry by flashing back the original ROM.

Thanks Wedge. Interesting. There is so much detail. For example, i thought DME MSD80 could go up to I8A0S with the same hardware, even jump columns in that picture from I4XXS or I7XXS. Then in that picture I thought IJXXS and IKXXS were for MSD81. I did not know there was a hardware difference that would prevent upgrading within those 2 groups. What is the physical hardware difference between a car running I7XXS and I8XXS? Is it the physical dme version?

Will give it some thought on whether to put this on the project list. Currently working on minor cosmetic and electrical issues to get the car as perfect as possible for almost 7 years old.

Yeah, only reason I say this is that I haven't actually upgraded a I4xxS or I7xxS to I8AOS. If anyone has I4 or I7 and wants to send me their VIN and current ZUSB Assembly number I can look it up and validate the upgrade path.

OFT is VIN based and as long as we don't change the VIN, the only thing you'll have to do is backup your new bin to the OFT after updating to make sure you have an updated bin stored on your OFT.

COBB users will need to remove the COBB before upgrading.

Thanks again. Since I don't yet have a cable and the software tools you mentioned, would you be able to use the software tools to tell the upgrade path if I emailed you my full original bin from I761S?

Email me your ZUSB # (assembly)... VIN is also good to help identify which ZUSB assembly numbers are compatible with your car. WedgePerformance at Gmail.

Here's where I'm at so far... having other forum members trouble shooting Vishnu's product. And of course i just get back in town to find that I still have no email follow-up from the past two weeks from Shiv or Robert.

You can find it with an INPA cable which you'll need to perform the upgrade via WinKFP. You can use the INPA application or you can get the UIF from WinKFP which will show your current ZUSB number. Email me WedgePerformance at Gmail and I can send you the links to the files you'll need.

once the update done is it possible to go back to the old version?

Maybe by uploading the old ROM backuped with the tablet?

Cable will most probably do. For the software you need winkfp and for the updates the daten files for e90.

I think you should be able to go back to original with OFT backupped original rom unless there is something I dont know. Maybe wedge has better insight?

Yes impossible with bmw tools, but by flashing back the original rom from your OFT backup it should be possible.

Only thing I could think that would prevent this is if something else is updated and/or has dependencies to DME version.

Just backup the new version before trying to go back...

I need to be 100% shure that I can go back before flashing to a newer version

MSD80 with newer version suffers of turbo lag, so if present I would like to go back

According to bmw the latest software fixes the lag that was introduced in the interim ROMs. Don't know if this is true though.

Anyone know the software versions in which the lag was introduced (to fix wastegate rattle etc.) and if the latest ROMs (which?) are lag free?

@Dyyd - You can't use the OFT to restore to an older version of the ROM because WinKFP will rewrite the boot section of the ROM with the latest firmware.

@marconi118 - SP-Daten maintains the version of the old ROMs, so you can always go back. With the XDF files, we are changing the spooling so it works well with I8A0S and IJE0S. I'm much happier with I8A0S that I was with the older firmware.

If you need help with getting the new 50.2 version of SP-Daten or apps to update your DME, please feel free to contact me.

Okay so winkfp writes more than just the ROM (edit more than the rom we get with OFT), good to know.

http://bmw-wiki.meyer-gruhl.de/Softw...eim_N54_(x35i)

There is a good link regarding the lag-issue and it seems it is fixable with ISTA/P option. I suspected the xdfs might fix this also as wedge said.

Okay finally got the cable and (possibly) the software set up with 50.2 spdaten.

Can I use fast baud rate with winkfp?

Do you know which part number is the lag-free version of i8a0s (mds81/auto)?
I suppose winkfp will auto-offer me the "rattle fix" version?

I realize this is moot once the xdf is applied but interested anyway.
