$400 to ship (4) 20lb wheels?!

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to buy a set of BBS RGRs off a guy on another forum and he's telling me it's going to cost somewhere close to $400 to ship from upstate NY down to MD?? I've heard around $100 is about right. Something sounds fishy... Any input would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

It might cost that much if he brought it to a UPS store, Mail Boxes etc or similar, especially if he's having them package them.

I learnt the hard way when I sold my 197s/RFTs to a guy in NY. I took it to a UPS store and I paid an arm and a leg (close to $300 iirc) and that was after negotiating the best way to pack them (seperate boxes or in pairs and type of service). I was told if you pack them minimally and drop ship them at fedex direct you'll be able to pull it off for half the price.

Should be approx $25 - $35 per wheel via UPS ground.

Do an online quote with the estimator below and call his bs bluff.

Agreed, if you are not providing your own packaging then it gets really expensive.

Yeah thats a great idea...

I did just that with my last wheels, I rented a minivan cheap and drove up to NJ. Cost me less than $100 including gas, snacks and toll. Half a day should do it, depends on traffic etc.

Better yet, borrow a minivan from family/relatives if you have any...

I shipped four Audi A4 wheels/tires across the country from CA to NY for $150 UPS ground.. That seems ridiculous IMO..

The wheels obviously cost a lot more than tires to ship. And you want them wrapped well. But I think $150 - $200 should definitely cover it..

mine were shipped from MD to TN, $150. they weren't "packaged", but the UPS store did put cardboard cutouts over the rims on both sides, they arrived without any issues. 4 wheels, with tires about 60lb ea x 4.

I bought a set of 4 19" wheels from Circle BMW in New Jersey and had them shipped to *San Francisco* UPS ground. It took one week and cost precisely $196. Unless he's shipping them overnight, this guy is screwing with you.

Thanks for the heads up everyone... I've never had wheels shipped to me or vice versa so I just need to know what I'm getting myself into. I just knew 4 wheels ONLY.. 20 lbs a wheel.. that just sounded like way too much.. Wish me luck on the deal

I have shipped lots of wheels...at a UPS store..and directly with UPS and Fedex. That cost sounds like he is going to one of those stores..and getting their upcharge. UPS demands you put these in boxes now..and that increases the cost. I would ask him to shop around...and go directly to UPS or Fedex locations for cost estimates..and have him SHOW you the receipt afterwards.

I agree with the above posters, it does sound about right if he's getting a quote from a UPS store. Speaking of which, I considered buying a set of tires (without rims) from some of the online places which are highly recommended on this board, and by ground to Canada they typically want over $100 per tire just to ship, Tire Rack being the exception.

This guy is straight up BS with you bro.

I shipped 4 wheels WITH tires to CA for $86 through USPS last summer.

Unless postage has sky rocketed no way is he being straight.

Bad ass wheel BTW.

Good luck!

JLevi shipped 4 wheels to me in Ontario, CANADA from California for like half that. That's clear accross the continent and an international boundry. This was FedEx Ground.

Shipped NJ to CA for $120 without tires via UPS. FedEx I think was cheaper, but $400 means he did something funny to them, like package them there.

why go through the effort? if you piss him off he'll just take your money...

i'd just tell him to go away and buy from someone else. i'm shipping 161's to vancouver from san diego and if i ship via fedex ground international, it's going to be ~$117.xx and is to arrive there in 4-6 days. the unfortunate thing is it'll cost me $40 in packaging materials

tell him to take his $400 shipping and shove it, that's some crazy "handling" fee...
