So I decided to make the jump to BMW wagons last year (always been a Volvo guy). This one surfaced today and looks to have most everything except the ski bag and adaptive cruise, not counting the M pkg.

https://www.ipacket.info/WBAUU3C57BA541779

Most work has been done by BMW dealers and I have the opportunity for a couple more specific questions than what's on the Carfax. Any guidance on major service to look for and would love to hear opinions on price....seems reasonable to me, especially with the chaos on pricing over the last year. I have a deposit in on it, and got a video from the sales guy and condition is VG+ or better, no rust or significant dings

I'm in search for a wagon as well but some of the common issues to look for are
Valve cover gasket leaks
Oil filter housing gasket leaks
Water pump
Control arms
Inner / outer tie rods
Vanity items like retracting cup holders are often broken and stuck inside
Window regulators is an issue on the E46 not so much on the E91
Unsure about the transfer case for e91 but it is a known issue for F30 models
I'm sure folks here will hopefully chime in more

I can't tell from the way you worded that sentence if the car has m-sport or not. Probably a fair price with m-sport, but a bit pricey with no m-sport.

Maintenance records are helpful if you can get them beyond the carfax. These BMWs have what we sometimes call the "big three" in potential oil leaks -- oil pan, valve cover, and oil filter housing. Between 60k and 100k they need to be replaced and hardly ever at the same time.

This car comes with the N52-series engine, which is a very reliable, non-turbo motor that can easily go 300k miles. I have two of them. What I have found is that at 100k miles the plugs and coils should all be replaced. FCP sells a kit for around $240 that took me about 90 minutes to install, start to finish. Also, whenever I buy a used BMW I have EVERY fluid changed, because normally only the oil and brake fluid ever get addressed by most owners.

The other thing to watch for is the cooling system, because BMW has several plastic fittings under the hood. Two weaknesses often mentioned are the water pump and the overflow tank. I have four older BMWs now, and thus far, I have had 1 overflow tank failure and no water pump failures. FCP sells the tank for something like $40 plus the $15 cap, and it is an easy swap. Can't speak to the water pump.

hope that helps

That is a very well optioned car.
Almost everything you’d want.

I agree. Looks like sports package, xenons, HK sound, comfort access, nav, heated wheel. Headlight washers and heated seats implies cold-weather package. I don't see m-sport.

Alarm system. Low profile roof rails. REAR SUNSHADES!
Not M sport, but a decent price in today’s market.
If it’s in good mechanical condition, I say go for it.
Tan over sapphire is a nice color combo too.

Open the oil fill cap and check to see if the engine looks clean or if it has sludge.
Feel for wheel shimmy at high speeds or/and under hard braking.

I've been trying to keep a thread up to date on the E91 as it has been fairly needy during the past 6 years since purchased with 102k miles on it. I would say that window regulators are very common on E9x cars, and they are much easier to replace than on an E46. We've done three on the E91 and one on our old E90 330i - a craft heat gun is highly recommended to unstick and restick the vapor barrier. Fortunately my M3 hasn't had any issue so far (on year 10 with that car now).

I would echo the comments others have mentioned especially about oil filter housing gasket leaks and valve cover gasket leaks -- guaranteed to happen on the N52 by 100k.

Here's a link to the thread on my E91. Further down from the first post you'll find all the additional issues that have cropped up. The car has 147k miles now, so everything in the thread was from 102k to 147k miles over the past six years.

As mentioned it's a great optioned out car yet a dealer that doesn't have photos? odd.

Some dealers list the car before it’s been cleaned or photographed to generate interest.
Some e91s posted here have also been listed like that.
They’re usually sold before photos are even added.

This was the situation with my E91. It was for sale at a dealership with no photos on the listing yet. I looked up the VIN through MDecoder to see the options. Found out it had the M-Sport package(s) and other options I was looking for. So I reached out to the dealer as quick as possible. Luckily I put a deposit down before others. The next day they dealer said they had about 8 others ready to put a deposit down and get on the waitlist.

Long story short, look up the VIN for options/history and reach out ASAP, pictures or not. That is probably the only way you will get a good deal and the vehicle you are looking for.

Same story for my car. Not me, but the previous owner did just what you did and snatched it up from a dealer in San Francisco before any pics were posted.

I have seen multiple instances of dealers loading cars into their systems for sale that have not yet arrived on their lots from wherever they were purchased. In one case I had to wait two weeks to see images.

Thanks everyone, super helpful. And yes, they took the car the day before on a trade and I got to them before they had detailed and serviced it for photos.

Sure enough, valve cover gasket was leaking on the exhaust and created a bit of a smell when you start it, so they're cleaning it up, replacing the gasket and the cabin air filter. Also brake pads all the way around.

One last piece to sort out....the tail light may have a short in it as it blew a bulb after they replaced it. Anyone seen this before? (or more specifically, any known history of this as a problem for E91s?)

Are they turning the rotors too?
The bulb issue is not common. There is a break in the wire somewhere.
A somewhat common issue is a break in the wires between the hatch and the body, but that is usually for the locks/fob.

I know this is a FS forum for e91, but for anyone that may be interested...

My 2017 F31 is currently listed for sale - mint with over $16k of OEM performance upgrades and still under CPO into 2023. With the few other CPO m-sports out there floating between 38-46k, a build like this with only 34k miles on the clock would be around 60k with labor, etc.

Also have a mint set of 270M wheels with TPMS and michelin alpin winter tires if interested!

Cold Start Clip with MPE:

Car is listed on Cargurus.com - feel free to DM with questions...thanks!

Damn that's great! Is this the one you got off the forum? Or am I thinking of a different car?

The AMG C63S bug bit…that V8 sound, torque and interior seats/cabin quality…wish we had the wagon in the US, but oh well.
