I just got my headers installed with a friend's help yesterday. Man, what a huge bitch. Everything was fucking rusted out underneath. Ugh, I hate winter...

Anyways, it sounds pretty epic with minimal drone on my custom setup. I have a Magnaflow muffler and a resonator delete, secondary cats still in place. I may put the resonator back in to see how it changes the sound, I wouldn't mind it a tad less raspy but even now, it sounds amazing.

BTW, the gains are AWESOME. The car pulls beautifully and the engine response is far improved, which is something I was not expecting. It definitely revs more freely, almost as if I have a lightweight flywheel.

Yea.. When doing my shifter I decided to disconnect OE headers from midpipe since I knew I'd have to do it eventually when installing headers. That was hardest part for me, eventually had to cut into flanges using die grinder to break the studs free.

We had to cut the stock headers off as the bolts holding the flange to the exhaust were completely rusted to the point of being one with the flange. There was no not or bolt left to put a socket on! And some of the header studs are a pain, especially having to repeatedly keep cross-tightening them. In the end the result was sooooo worth it.

I'll upload some video clips soon. Can't wait to take it for a spin again!

Sweeet. How loud is it, 6ix? Compared to before?

Your previous setup sounds similar to mine.. I'm already worrying about the noise level after adding headers.

Loud. Quite loud, and it drones below 2200. A bit of rasp, too. I'm likely going back to a resonator or Hemholtz chamber to reduce the drone. I don't mind the rasp it reminds me of E36 DTM cars lol.

Here's a quick clip I took last night. Proper drive-bys and dyno to come shortly.

BTW the pops and burbles on decel are hilarious! I love that it's not artificially forced constantly like with "burbles tunes" and only happens sometimes. Pretty easy to manipulate with the throttle, too.

That was my initial thought when I hooked my car up w/ the headers as well!
It was very easy to make it happen and then Bob enlightened me that the 330i had a pre-existing overrun feature in an email a while back...

Had I known, Idk if I would have payed for it XP

Now of course that might be because it isn't just a simple resonator, seeing as how the collector is built into it.
Just to follow up on this - they (including the on on our cars) don't really muffle the exhaust. There was someone on here who deleted his resonator and it made the car a raspy mess, but didn't increase the volume.

Just do it right - you may need more than one muffler, and that's fine, use a good resonator/muffler combo if you must. I don't recommend driving the car without either.

Got the headers and tune installed last night. Getting the OEM headers off was actually pretty easy. Few studs came out, but no issues overall. Installing the new headers however was quite the PIA. Ended up having to remove one of the exhaust studs for clearance to get both banks mounted.

Sound is plenty good with the OE resonator and muffler, minus the primary and secondary cats. I couldn't hear any pops on decel at all, even with the "burble tune" at first. Disabled the servo for the rear exhaust flap and I started hearing em. They are a little excessive, but I'm not sure if it bothers me enough yet. Time will tell.

I'll try and get some AV content for reference this evening. For those running catless headers, did you retain all four of the O2 sensors? I kept the secondary O2 sensors out, but am wondering if they need to be placed back in

I kept all O2 sensors in and don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t. My car runs great and throws no codes so I figure they are definitely worth keeping lol

I'll probably put them back in. I was getting an error code for one of them already before header install, and I was so beat last night I said f*ck it and mounted everything up without em

I crack myself up

The amount of fuel required to operate an engine correctly depends upon the amount of air flowing into the combustion chambers. Since the driver controls airflow (load) with the accelerator pedal, the powertrain control module (PCM) can only control fuel. It uses sensors to measure or calculate airflow, consults an air/fuel ratio map in its permanent memory, then chooses the correct injector pulse width to match that airflow. That pre-programmed injector pulse will provide exactly one gram of fuel for each 14.64 grams of air (a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio), but the PCM almost always adjusts injector pulse width to provide more or less fuel than specified in the map. That adjustment is “fuel trim.”

I thought the primary sensors adjusted fuel trims, and the secondary sensors were mostly just there to check the function of the catalysts. Hmm guess I was wrong. Either way, no real reason to remove them heh.

That's what I thought. When I did headers on my e46 a couple years ago I thought they functioned in that manner
