Adding my "vibrations" to the mix........ If anyone fixed theirs, or had the same thing, PLEASE post!

1. I hit a major pothole that sent cobblestone flying. Result was a completely dented rear wheel, torn up underhood shield, and a dented BMW Rod (31116768714).

2. Replaced all those parts, had the wheels re-balanced, and I still feel a "full body" vibration whenever I accelerate past 60mph. The vibration is NOT felt in the steering wheel. I feel it more through my gas pedal, and it feels like it originated in the front half/frame of the car.

3. Took it to two shops: One re-balanced the wheels (did not help). The other shop pointed out that my front two wheels aren't straight (spun them and they didn't spin perfectly straight).

4. Assuming it's the wheels, I put on two of my winter rims/tires in the front, and the vibration was cut in half........ But it was still there!

Anyone have any solutions, advice, or HOPE for this old thread?

Always start with a new set of tires + rims balanced with roadforce. If issue still persists then you can start looking at other things like driveshaft

Starting with a new set of tires + rims can get a bit costly when trying to diagnose a vibration.

Yes but it might get more expensive replacing parts. Find a workshop with Hunter roadforce balance machine and see if your tires are ok

What's great is that Hunter official webpage lists all the shops that use their balancers. You just put your zip code and it will tell you where the closest one is. I found one a mile away from where I live.

Engine mounts and blown shocks? I recently had this problem turns out my rear shocks were 100% dead, driving on springs!

I wouldn't be surprised if my rear shocks were blown... But I feel the vibration in the front of the car, and through the gas pedal.

What did you feel with your engine mounts and blown shocks?

the only way I got rid of vibrations at hwy speeds was to do a road force balance of the wheels....everything else made no change.....

That could be only from the wheels. Either heavy spots in wheels or heavy and/or flat spots on tires

If you feel vibration when you get on/off the gas is the center bearing on drive shaft.

I felt the car swing and vibration in the steering as well. It was pretty annoying. I thought it was just the rears it was like 1 front 1 rear and a tranny/engine mount was all jacked up. 80k miles is starting to take its toll.

Thank you for the response.

I'm at 94,000mi, but all my vibration issues came about after hitting a massive pothole (blew a tire, bent a wheel, and tore up my undercarriage shield). The tranny/engine mounts seem to be mentioned a lot, sounds like it could very well be that.

Is that the Giubo or Flex Disc?

So far from all the threads I've read on vibration, the most common culprits seem to be:
  • Wheelbearing
  • Driveshaft unbalanced, BMW Giubo / Flex Disc
  • Bent Hub
  • Worn bearing
  • Front axle shaft CV joint
  • Control arm or Control arm bushings

Since I had TWO mechanics look at the car, one just re-balanced all four wheels and said it should be fine. The other said he didn't see anything broken, and that my front two wheels weren't straight, and that could cause the vibration (I switched to my winter wheels/tires, and vibration was still there; thus eliminating the non-straight wheel theory).

Im having the same issue at the moment, i have aftermarket reps, started to feel shortly after i put them on.

changed the Thruster arms, just did the bearing and CV boots, and all looks fine.

Installed ST coilovers, and then i got new tires, and roadforce balanced.

The Vibration stopped by a huge ammount, but is still there just less subtle.

Cant do rolls past 180, as it vibrates like crazy!

I notice it also happens when i let off the gas, not when im accelerating.

Where did you feel your vibrations from the partially seized caliper?

Front of car, rear of car, steering wheel, frame, shift knob, pedals?

Front seats, just a faint vibration. I did the usual checks for a seized caliper, but nothing stood out. It was only when it was time to replace the brake pads did the seized caliper make itself known.

Going to add my vibration to the list as well. I just put new wheels/tires on after I found out I had a bent wheel. New wheels/tires balanced perfectly with no issues but I still have a mild vibration, though its not as bad/feels different than the one with the bent wheel. It only occurs under certain braking conditions and at times when im on the free way going straight and add slight pressure to the steering wheel while its on center. Im assuming it's my thrust rod/control arm bushings, but I am not 100% sure.

Reading this makes me cringe because my car is doing the same thing. Hwy speeds causing vibration through the steering wheel. It's also making noise at slow speeds, around 20mph. I'm 90% sure it's thrust arm related. Guess it's time for M3 control arms and other suspension parts!
DIY all the things.
