My car almost died on me..
When I go to work every morning I take this back road that's relatively fast with a 55 mph speed limit and I usually drive it fast to get up to that speed roughly 5-10 over coz there's never any cops and everyone else is driving that fast too.. Well anyways this morning when I got on that road, at a stop sign I do my usual and do just under WOT as I get up to speed and when I got to 3rd, my engine light came on at the exact same time i shifted.. My car started sputtering and I put my hazards on almost immediately.. I didn't hear anything the exact moment it happened coz I was listening to music. Every time I stepped on the gas, it would sputter.. I found a side road a little ways up and found a spot to park. Popped the hood and the car was sputtering still. Checked all my hoses and everything. It all looked normal and nothing seemed out of place. Turned off the car and turned it back on to see if the engine light would come back on. It didn't! So wtf? Could it be spark plugs? I don't know.. I drove to work with no other problems.. Everything was back to normal.
Here's my cars specs. 08' 335i E92 JB4 w/ CP-E DCI Running map 5 I also place this in forced induction thread. |

It could be your HPFP. Is the SES light on at all? Any rough idling?

Mine did the same exact thing last week...I took it to friends shop to check the code and all it said was a misfire in cylinder 2... And it's run fine since that day

Yea there isn't any lights on at all anymore, only when it happened this morning. I do get rough idling from time to time.. Usually it's when I'm parked after a cold start though..
Sometimes, well most of the time actually.. I can feel the car sputter a little when I drive a little hard. Usually it's when I'm WOT in 3rd or 4th.. |

My car did that twice (~1000 miles between occurrences). I took it to BMW of Seattle to see what the deal was because the second time it happened my service light stayed on. They determined it was a misfire in the third cylinder. They replaced the coil pack and I have not had an issue since.

FP or Spark plug as the consensus is. Pull the code if you can. I have a reader if you want to pull the code too.

So after getting advice from the other thread. I updated the interface from 2/7 firmware to 3/7. Ran the codes and found that cylinder 5 had misfired. I looked at the All Map AFR numbers and fuel open loop mapping numbers and they didn't match the default settings for firmware 3/7. I saved the settings back to default and deleted the codes. Everything runs better and more smooth. And the codes havent popped up since then. Should've read the instructions but now I've learned my lesson and whenever I upgrade firmware I'll definitely double check those settings to see if they're at default.
