What mileage did you change serpentine belt?
Curious because I'm at 68k and the belt feels strong. Just wanted to do it as a.preventive measure. What else to buy while replacing ? Can't find a diy on e90post.
Thanks |

Thanks! That is an awesome diy! I'm going to hold off on the water pump. But definitely am going to get the belt and the idler pulley.
Again thanks ! |

Did it while I had the new turbos put in. I'm at 52K.

I did mine around 70k. Did belt, tensioner and idler pulleys. Really it was a waste. The belt was in perfect shape.

Yeah, I did all that as well around 56k miles. Everything was in really good shape...it was one of those "while I'm in there anyway" kinda maintenance items for me though.

58K. Belt looks fine but it's one less thing I have to worry about.

agreed with everyone above, it's one less thing to worry about, i was tearing the whole thing apart for the VCG, OFHG, vacuum line replacement and valve cleaning anyway.

Anyone wanna post a quick DIY? I figure is just take out the radiator fan, snap a pic then replace things with new parts. Any details I'm missing?? Torque specs maybe?

I had mine replaced twice. 20K was warranty, thing was squeaking really bad. The one at 50K was just a "while you're in there" but there were chirps every now and then. I'm sure the other parts (tensioner, idler pulley, etc.) are just fine.

Did mine, pulleys, etc at 85k or so. It's very inexpensive and there were several guys who broke a belt (I think all were the '07 models that the belt was very close to the subframe) and in doing so trashed the engine. To be clear, breaking the belt doesn't trash the engine, but in a couple of cases it got wrapped around the crank pulley and sucked in the main seal. As unlikely as that sounds, it's been reported several times by reputable guys. Regardless, my tensioner was not working properly so I changed all that jazz out. Pretty quick & easy. The belt inspected fine afterwards, but the tensioner was shot.

The biggest problem with the belt is that the PS pulley hits the subframe when the motor mounts get weak. There have also been some cases of broken tensioners too though.
When the belt goes it has a pretty high probability of getting wrapped around the crank pulley and then being forced through the crank seal. This will destroy he motor if you don't turn it off quickly, because pieces of shredded belt will be pumped around the motor.

Yes rad fan needs to come out on an n54, don't forget you'll need a T60 to remove the tension off the belt.

110k but mechanic said the belt was turning white and the sides were fraying. Also replaced the idler pulley, less noise coming from the engine bay now.

I was thinking, while I'm at it I should do the intake manifold cleaning/ walnut blasting. I don't have the tools but I figure I can clean with a wire brush maybe? Seeing as I'm going to have clearance to move the bolt that open and closes so I can clean without worrying about prices going into the motor. My main question is can I open and close without the belt being on?

Just some food for thought. I just started taking everything apart tonight and discovered that I am yet another person with a smashed power steering pulley...
There is no clear indication of what it impacted but luckily for me the belt is completely undamaged and actually looks to be in very good shape.
