320d muffler delete

I see this is quite an old thread, but I'm posting anyway.

I'm not privileged to own a 6-cylinder BMW, so I have my 4-pot oil burner (which I do actually love), and I have to make do.

I've always thought it makes a nice noise when getting the revs up, but it's always soft - you would have to strain your ears to hear it. So I thought taking out the rear muffler would cause it to be slightly louder, and I will be able to hear it. (In fact, I was inspired when I drove a 595 Abarth; a car I desperately want to own).

I didn't want to have a 320x with a dual pipe at the back because that's fake. I'm somewhat of a tail-pipe snob, and I'm very particular and critical of aftermarket jobs. In addition, the standard tip on the d is hideous (down-firing), as is the tip on the i (although not quite as bad). So I wanted a round tip. I ended up with a 96mm (or so) straight, round, fully polished tip for about free, and I like it. I finally got it fitted, after waiting 4 weeks for an opportunity and a shop who would accommodate me when I did have a chance, and it looks fantastic! I know I'm fitting a round shape into a square hole, but it looks great. They just fitted it a bit high, so I want to lower it about a cm.

It sounds absolutely perfect too. Normal driving, you need to strain your ears to hear it. Accelerating, I hear the growl a lot better, and if I drive normally with the sunroof open, it sounds wonderful. In fact, it makes no sense to me why BMW put the rear muffler there in the first place. The engine is so loud, they may as well have left the muffler out, the exhaust note would have been slightly louder, and the car sounds much better. Oh, and the blow-off which was loud is even louder. Quite a unique sound there.

I think I can feel the lack of back-pressure. It's a little less twitchy, so likely slightly lower torque at the bottom, but whatever, it's a 320d, which isn't much of a performance car, is it?

I will make a video and post that and probably some pictures when I get to it. I just want to conclude that for R1000 ($80), it's one incredibly fantastic mod! (I paid R680 for the fitment, which is fairly expensive, and the tip I got for basically free, but would have cost about R320).

Just pulled the trigger and got a muffler delete done today. Going to give it a month or two to really let it set in and see how I like it. Sounds pretty great idling and on start up though, not enough time driving it around to get a grasp on if I like that. Need to have one of my friends drive it past me a couple times too. I'll try and upload a video tonight.

$208 out the door, seems to be a little over what most are/have paid for this, but it was a pretty reputable shop and it seems like they did a good job.

Here is a quick video I put together of some sounds from my muffler delete.
