Hi took the car to BMW they advised injector, coil and plug change for cylinder 4 and wanted to charge 700 for it!!! My question is how specialists a job is this, does it require any reprogramming? Could a decent garage to it?

BMW being lazy in order to maximise their invoice to you!

It's not likely to be all three of those and you already know that you have new plugs!

None of the replacements are technically difficult but an injector will need programming and now you have INPA you can do that yourself. There are plenty of videos about on how to do it online.

A competent garage would have no problem but if you do some of the detective work first it will keep the cost down and you may even be able to fix it yourself.

First thing I would do is swap cylinder 4 coil with a cylinder on the other bank, say cylinder 2. Clear the DME fault codes and run the car for a day or two. If the misfire moves to cylinder 2 you know the coil is squiffy if it doesn't you know the coil is ok.

If the fault appears on cylinder 4 again, swap the spark plug with another cylinder and go through the same process. You have then eliminated or identified the plug and coil from the issue.

The injector is a bit more involved as each time you move one it will need reprogramming to that cylinder but it is possible to use a similar technique although if you are not confident I would entrust this part to a garage as injectors are expensive items to play around with.

Hi - I have just checked my service history and can see the fuel injectors were replaced in 2009 and coils in 2012 the car has only done 25000 miles since then. Am I being paranoid in thinking there may be an inherent defect here? If not what could it be?

BMW's are complicated cars. They can and do go wrong from time to time. The fact that you had the injectors replaced does not stop one of them now being faulty. The car may have only travelled 25,000 miles on those injectors but they were replaced 10 years ago!!! That is plenty of time for the seals to break down etc. etc. Same with the coils which were replaced 7 years ago.

I generally only get about 5000 miles from a set of tyres not because I hoon around the Nurburgring but after 8 years on the car they fall apart while they still have 6mm or 7mm of tread left! My 2007 E93 only has 35,000 miles on the clock from new but I still have to fit replacement parts occasionally because the car is 12 years old.

There is no short cut to fixing problems on any car, BMW or not. You have to get your hands dirty or pay someone else to do it for you. I have made suggestions to you regarding your misfire fault code and others have suggested checking which injectors you have fitted even providing photo references.

Get these checks done and by all means come back for advice but repeatedly asking "what is wrong with my car" when you have not carried out any of the suggestions is not going to cure the fault.

Thanks. Perhaps you misunderstood the nature of my enquiry. I completely understand I have to get the works done but as a mechanical novice I was trying to understand the nature of the issue i.e. the difference between a wear and tear mechanical problem and a more serious underlying inherent defect issue.

Injectors replaced 10 years ago are unlikley to be the latest version. The injectors for this engine have undergone a lot of upgrades to sort out issues. The current version is 11. You can read the version on the head of your injectors.

You don't need a garage to do it. Get your hands dirty and its really a easy job.
Its not the end of word if you don't code the injectors. I have replaced a few without coding.

If you near me and can do DIY to certain level I be happy to help you replace that injector. You can buy injectors on ebay £185 and need a metal O-ring for £8.

The job does not require any special tools.. just a towel ready to catch the fuel when you loosen the fuel pipe.

One of these will help you with removing the injectors:

If your injectors pre-date verison 11 and if you can afford it, you should really think about changing all the injectors, or at least all in the affected bank (cylinders 1-3 and 4-6). See here:

My 35i is still on its original injectors, they are now 13 years old & the car he now done 117,000 miles. My local BMW dealer had diagnosed 'faulty' injectors 3 times at 58k, 84k & 103k each time they misdiagnosed the problem.
To see if you do have a leaky injector just pop out the spark plugs after cars been standing over night, if one or more are leaking the plug will be wet with fuel

Personal view? Go to a BMW dealer. You will be sure to get the latest iteration. Cotswold BMW give a discount to members of this Forum...

Bit late on this, but if you're still after a decent garage in London, give Jim a call, he's near Gatwick.
