whining noise under hood
2011 335i x coupe (n55) after the car is running for a brief trip it starts to make a whining noise. it usually seems to occur after the rpms drop like when I am sitting at a red light, but it could be that it is drowned out while I am moving. It does not do it ALL the time when its just idling, but usually after even a short drive. can anyone give me an idea of what this is? video below

its difficult to tell without being there to try to determine what area the noise is coming from. I would start by checking the drive belt since that is the most likely culprit.

I'm having a very similar noise, seems to only happen when it's cooler outside. To me it sounds similar to the sound that people have reported on here that ended up being the crankshaft seal.
see this thread... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=629612

would I notice any oil or fluids leaking if it was the crank shaft seal? Also does anyone have an estimated cost of the job if thats what it is, want to prepare my wallet/anus before I take it in this week.

That sound is not coming from your crankshaft seal, it's more common to come from a pulley, and it's so easy to test if one of your pulleys is the culprit. With the engine running (idling) just put some water with the water hose on each of the pulleys, if the noise is gone, one or some of your pulleys need to be replaced.

Well I was just told by the shop it is definitely coming from the transmission, trans guy isn't in today so it goes back monday. Any guesses? this sounds expensive, and its also progressed to be much louder and constant

So the noise comes from the valvetronic system. I bought a Foxwell NT510 and it showed a valvetronic error. The NT510 has a valvetronic "learning" function. Ran the test and the noise immediately went away. Its possible it might rear its ugly head again but at least I know what it is. The NT510 has already paid for itself.
