I was a betting man, I'd say it was either the rear main seal or the oil pan.

How much is a rear main seal job?

1200 to 1500 if you pay to have it done

In the background you will notice a clicking type of sound with one to two second intervals.

Did you figure out what caused the leak ?

I took one picture from underneath the car, then spent 3 hours with a rag and electrical contact cleaner. Cleaned and dried everything that I could reach around the engine, including the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Drove the car for 20 min, somehow aggressively in the last 5-6 minutes. Checked for oil leaks and there it was, right between the engine and the gearbox. There is small, round plastic cover that I removed, but it looked dry inside. The second picture that I took clearly shows where the oil appeared. Have you experienced anything like this? What needs to be fixed in order to stop that leak?
The car is 2007 328i with 148K miles on it and I just purchased it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
I have a leak around this area too. I don't see or feel any oil coming out from the black round plastic piece that covers the port into the flywheel though. I also don't find oil leaking anywhere else on the oil pan.

That leads to my question, can a valve cover gasket leak at the rear drip oil to this area?

Any insights will be greatly appreaciated!

My vote is rear pan gasket is leaking, which makes the rear crank seal look like it is leaking. Being on E90 Post going on 13 years now, I really can't think of a thread that someone posted their crank seal(s), either one, was found to actually be leaking. It's a rare issue for the E9X.

Did you find the cause of the leak? I have the same issue. Also in your photo I noticed a missing bolt on left side of the photo, could it also be a lose/missing bolt?

Bump, same issue.

I reckon its valve cover and it makes it way back. But I've cleaned mine and will test again tomorrow.

Well know leak It from the main seal. Transmission down, new seal (my advice is to mount OEM) and the problem is fixed.
First the engine must be inspected for leak from the oil pan, then from the swirl flaps (diesel), but this leak is common problem.

Any updates on the fixes? No one really ended up posting their solutions, and unfortunately I have the same leak... Thanks in advance!
