e92 Bike Rack

Hi,

Can anyone offer any advice on roof racks for transporting a road bike on a 335i coupe? The car appears to have these great roof rack mounts but as I've never had a roof rack I was not sure if I would need to acquire a propriotary BMW roof mount system or if all of the major roof rack manufactures would have a way to utilize the BMW roof system.

Also if anyone has any advice on whether it's better to have a roof rack where you do/don't have to remove the front wheel of the bike that would be great as well.

Thanks for your help!

None of the rack suppliers (Thule, Yakima) at this time have racks for the 335i coupe. So you need to buy, as I just did, the BMW support rack system (part#82-71-0-397-227) and then a BMW bike rack (or racks) to mount onto the rack system. For road bikes this is part#82-72-0-393-083

As mentioned above, Thule and Yakima have nothing yet. I own a bicycle shop and I would highly recomend a fork mounted rack. The full bike mounts add a ton of wind resistance and I have seen more problems with them than fork mounted. Also pick up a bike bra to protect it against debris off the road and bugs.

the oem bmw base support rack system are actually thule rapid aero bars, thule's premium bars....you can attach any of the thule attachments by using the thule xadapt 1, 2, 3 or 4 (depending on the attachment you want to use)....there have been couple threads on this...but seems the search function doesn't seem to filter well...can't find the threads....

go online and do a search for xadapt...it'll tell you which xadapt you need for certain thule attachments....

i went with the oem bmw base support rack system...with thule flat mount 4 snowboard carrier using the xadapt 2.....(i wasn't too fond of the bmw slant carriers...)

Quick update for anyone else that may pass this way looking for info on the e92 BMW oem base roof rack system (part #82-71-0-397-227). A local parts department is quoting $175 plus tax for the base system. Maybe your local parts department will be cheaper. If not it may be worthwhile to check out ebay as I found the same part listed there for $128 (plus $19.90 shipping) which may save you a few bucks.

I fold down the rear seats and take off the front wheel of my road bike. I got a 6x7 utility/moving pad from home depot ($15) which covers the whole trunk area plus sidewalls plus the back of the rear seats...very nice fit.

I know the OP is asking about roof racks but just wanted to add this for other roadies/cyclists on the board

the bmw catalog has the "touring cycle and mt bike holder" for $110 whereas the "racing cycle holder" is listed for $148 plus another $48.50 just for the front wheel holder (don't see why anyone wouldn't just throw the front wheel in the trunk).

i was set on buying the first for $110 but after your comment, i'm reconsidering things. do roof racks cause reduced mpg? is it safe to have a bike mounted so high up? bit worried about my bike.

Roof racks are perfectly safe. I have had one on another car for years at 80+mph it was fine. I am currently planning on the OEM Roof rack with Thule fork mount tray ($130) which is supposed to fit with the Thule aero bar adapter. I am just trying to find out if the OEM rack is easily removed. My Yakima was a pain in the ass to remove and reinstall. I don't want to leave it on all the time.

Pictures

Does anyone have any pictures of the OEM road bike roof rack? The pictures in the accessories catalog are pretty small and poor quality.

I just ordered the OEM baserack and two of the bike holders. They should be in at the dealer by Wednesday. I'll install them this week and take a couple pictures.

No problem, I'm curious to see how easy the install is.

I also ordered one of each of the holders (one racing cycle and one Mt bike holder), so I'll be able to post pics of both mounted.

I just got my base roof rack and two bike carriers. The install took about an hour. It was fairly simple, once I figured out where everything went. It took about 15 minutes to remove the bikes and entire rack.
Here are a few pics.

Looks good I am about to order one myself. I have a few questions

Once the initial install is complete is it easily and quickly removed?

Do you have a part # on the fork mount carrier? I was planning on using a Thule tray but that fork mount looks pretty good. Does it seem solid?

It is easy to install and remove once you figure out how everything goes together. I only plan on having the rack on when needed, so ease of installing was important.

I'll find the part number and post it. The fork mount is solid.

Thanks that is my plan also as far as roof racks go it looks good but the car looks much better without it.

I haven't seen the Thule tray, but I'm happy with the BMW one. It's actually nicer than I thought it would be.

The BMW fork mount cycle holder comes with a tray. The picture in the accessory catalog shows a different fork mount holder (two piece).
