hey there, which wire or wires did you have to splice together? I just saw my green wire is cut. Did you find more cut wires other than the green one? the light on P park shifter does not turn on due to this besides the fact my DS mode is not working either. I am planing to work on this soon. Any tips you can give me?

Unfortunately, I don't recall which wires I fixed but there were many. Just follow each wire and look for cuts. I recall at one point the wires seem to lead to the side of the shifter and back out. It is at this point I dismanteled the clip (believe it was 2 screws) and realized the wires were cut. If I didn't dismantle I wouldn't have seen it. You should first look for the obvious wear and tear and repair. If that's not the problem I would then dismantle the portion. Unfortunately I don't have pics. Good luck

Does anyone know the gage of the wires. I've starting have an intermittent issue that mirror what is described here and before I open it up, I like to pick up the correct gage wire to patch in.
Thanks |

Hey guys - well since I fixed my problem back 2 years ago, I just lost my downshift again. Funny I had welded all the wires and then taped it. I now have to untape everything and see what is going on. Can't believe it, love my car but what a p***** to deal with this issue. Does anyone know which wire is the downshift, I believe it is the white - just hope it is evident when I remove the tape. Glad I was able to help others though. Also if anyone can respond to Orion4 as per the gauge of the wire I"d appreciate it as well. Thks everyone.

Steptronic Wiring Harness Issue
I suffered the same problem with my 2008 335i 2 weeks ago. Took it a part yesterday and found 2 of the wires broken and all the rest except one breaking. It was ugly! Spliced in a 3-4" piece of 20 gauge wire, soldered and heat-shrinked all the wires. Additional cut off the back part of the cover that was pressing the wires against the shifter assembly to remove the stress point. Piss poor design. All works perfectly- for now. Attached is a pic of the mess I found. Sorry no other pics as I was under a time constraint and wanted to get it done and buttoned up. Thanks for the DIY- made it easy to work through the process.

Hey, how did you guys access the small torx bolts? After removing the 3 large torx bolts and wiggling the shifter, I still can't get enough clearance to get a tool in there to unscrew the bolts on the right side.

I was so excited to read this today as I cannot go into DS mode... I pulled everything apart and did not see a single frayed wire.. it was dusk though and I left the center trim off.. I will look again but I went through almost every wire looking for a cut one... No dice.. I really hope I can find where the issue is. I cannot go into sport mode or manually shift.... although I love my car... sometimes I F'ing hate it...

If you havent yet, you may have to remove the black tape to locate the broken wire(s). mine were hidden until I removed the tape.
Good luck! |

Tore down my shifter assembly yesterday to see if my sport mode wasn't working for the same reason. Sure enough 5 of the wires were broke. Don't remember the colors exactly, but I will be fixing this myself this weekend! Great DIY post!

Sorry to bring back an old thread but has BMW ever acknowledged this as a known problem?
I took my e92 into service today for the issue, they said that because I had a combobox they couldnt recode the transmission. This sounded absurd to me. A 2 minute google search brings me to this thread and 5 minutes later I confirmed the same thing shown here. Purple and White were were broken. Normally I would just fix this myself but they charged me 3 hours diagnostic fee and my car is still under warranty so I want to have them fix it and possibly get a refund. Or do you guys think I am over reacting? |

Just went through this on my car as well. No DS mode. Thank you OP for this thread, made life soooooo much easier and saved me a nice chunk of change that would have gone to the dealer!

E90 shifter repair
Hi Guys,
Just to confirm what everyone said her. E90 shifter sport mode failure, was easy to fix. 15 mns and less than A$0.50 to fix. 1-Removing the aluminum trim was the hardest part (5 minutes job), be careful when removing it, it is just clipped in. unplug everything (easy) 2-Unscrew the 3 tork screws 30.....30 seconds job 3-move slightly the assembly on the left side to access the cover that sits on the top of the solenoid......30 seconds job (remove 3 tork screws 9) 4-use something as a lever to release the pinched bundle of wires (I use a screw driver), took 5 seconds 5-remove the black sticky tape and check for wiring Mine was the white cable completely severed, clean cut 6-Did not soldier, just crumple it. 7-tape the wires back together, and live it outside of the assemble, plenty of space there Reconnect the connectors, put the trim cover back et voila ! less than 15 mns and i am not a mechanic, just a regular guy that did not want to fork in $1300 for a new assembly here in Sydney plus $300 labour... |

I can't believe that I was able to fix it. The white wire was completely severed. 4 others were almost there too. In my case DS was not working only, everything else was completely functional.
I was testing however if DS engages without reconnecting all the plugs back to the center console, but I think in order for DS to be working you need to have all that plugged in. Initially I thought I didn't fix it but once I put everything back together it started working. Thanks a lot to all the people that have contributed to this thread. This is awesome.

I am wondering, wouldn't this need to be a recall? It is obviously really bad design. Sooner or later all e9x's will face this problem and possibly other models too
