thanks for the good info - we swapped the longblock - thought it would be easier that way
sounds like we can eliminate lifters which is good. what worries me if timing is off, is why?? wouldn't some sort of malfunction have occurred for this to happen? i don't want to invest in another engine with issues - if timing is off i'll send it back and fix my old longblock, which is what i wanted to do in the 1st place.
would the impulse sender or hall effect sensor be able to re-adjust cam position/timing so that the engine wouldn't run..?
I would agree with you that if its a long block, the timing is probably fine but its always good to check. The fact that the company you bought it from said compression was fine but when you had it checked it was low makes me suspect either valves opened when they shouldnt be or the shop you bought it from sold you a junk engine. If the timing is off, then the place you bought it from either messed with it or vac messed with it. I don't really know what else to do from there. My knowledge of the n54 is limited. My advice was based on my previous knowledge of working on other engines. Maybe the connection to the crank and cam position sensors is faulty. I would just start with the basics and make sure its not a mechanical issue. Once you rule that out, start looking into electrical issues.

Besides the compression. I can assure you that the DME needs to be programmed to the engine.
I have had a DME swap, slightly different, but it does require reprogramming. The DME is by the way VIN locked.

Also check other enigne parts that might require coding to your DME.

I agree with this, but considering I'm being told compression is low we're not going to bother with programming anything.

decided to return that engine and have my original rebuilt, which was my original plan... grrr

If this engine was indeed from Dans car, then I know for a fact it was good, as I was the one who last touched it

Did you swap the injectors? If you did I can definitely see this being a problem. The injectors actually have to be coded into the ECU because each injector is manufactured with slightly different piezo electric properties.

The ECU has to go with the injectors or you need to recode them in.

Not exactly. The car will still run on a non coded injector, it just wont be optimized to the car.

I have done this several times replacing injectors as I have to drive the car to my friend at the dealer and have him code it. Even LostMarine had an injector put in by us and drove all the way to South NJ and had it coded the next day, no problems

sounds like a replacement engine will not need to be re-coded and the original dme will work with it. after massive headaches and huge time lags a second replacement engine was just put in my car and apparrently runs. yes the shop is coding the injectors. i don't know anything more at this time

First of all, the dme is not coded to any specific engine, so you can run any N54 dme with any N54 motor. second you dont have to recode injectors, you can swap injectors like changing underwear and they will still work with no problems.

My best bet for those codes is that the engine is out of timing, when I swaped my engine with a new crate engine from bmw, I had to put it back on timing because even from factory they can be out of timing.

I would start by taking out the JB and let it run on stock dme to troubleshoot any problems and go from there.

Good to hear. But why did you have to replace your engine in the first place?

I have similar errors. Same MY N54, I used my old engine wiring harness on the new motor since the new motors engine wiring harness was for an auto tranny.

Car cranks but wont start. A ton of random error codes, electrical fault, abs fault, and airbag fault.
