How'd you come up with that deduction?

I've never seen or saw someone say it removes carbon buildup completely.

Au Contraire...what it does exactly is reduce carbon at the valves...

I agree it does reduce it but it was my understanding it wasn't reducing it by an extraordinary amount but hey if I'm wrong I might get one.

Not sure where your understanding came from. Are there posts suggesting that low-side cans aren't catching enough to matter?

There are quite a number of posts about externalized low-side catch cans, both on this forum and N54tech. A typical observation is 2oz of oil every 500 miles or so, which is pretty much what I see. That oil would have been deposited directly onto the intake valves. It's not that the low-side catch can design is brilliant- it's that the BMW PCV design is so poor.

Although I do not have photo documentation, I have already reported here that the difference in build-up over 20K miles is readily apparent. That means, while I cannot provide a quantitative assessment, I can assure you that that the difference is very easy to see. I consider this improvement well worth $200.

PS: just to be clear, the device I've installed is the one from Rob Beck

The consensus I've come up with is that it prolongs the interval between walnut blasts by a good margin...I don't think we can expect them to extract all of the oil from recirculating, can we?

That one isn't gonna do what the OPs can is doing. That can will only function when the engine is under boost which isn't where most of the oil in the intake tract is coming from.

This is a high pressure side catch can, you want the low side external pcv/catch can setup(RB Turbo) to remove most of the oil from the system

One for high side and one for low side.

Both of those kits only function when the engine is under boost. Years of experience documented on this board indicates that a lot more oil gets recirculated into the intake tract when not in boost. Also...when I was looking for a catch can, I saw some reviews of those ebay kits that said the hoses were crap...and BMS apparently won't sell you the hoses only.

The kit OP is talking about is this one...

https://www.rbturbo.com/rb-n54-external-pcv-kit

There's a really good thread documenting the install and some observations with the kit...search for external PCV.

Thanks for the reply. So with that kit I just need to purchase at catch can and I am good to go?

Exactly...if I recall, either the BMS or the mishimoto work. Perhaps even the ebay kit...

You can buy the hoses from BMS, it's been available for a while now. They must have changed their website around because it took me a few minutes to find it again. Previously they were just options within the oil catch can link, now they're listed separately as replacement parts for the catch can.

that's a high side catch can (pressure) not low side but can be turned into low side catch can. I'm actually using that catch can with extra baffling for the low side. Works well.

The piping on mine is much bigger than RB setup so likely more effective as far as flow goes.

Mine actually collects significant amounts of water but I run e85

I run an E55 blend.

How did you add the extra baffling?

Sorry for all the questions but I don't know shit about this stuff.

Shoved it into the gap between the existing baffle and the outlet. Some idiots use steel wool which is the last thing you want sucking into your intake.
