335d , Oil Leak saga , now turbo and intercooler issues!
Well ! If i didnt have bad luck id have no luck at all!
Iv had a issue with oil drips apearing on my drive way for a few months now , checked the oil level and its droped about 1l in 4000 miles , so its using oil Iv had a carry on with the famous red boost pipe , original one gave up after the remap , got a forge motorsport item , it then failed after 3 months , back onto a brand new standard one , and its lasted about 11 months and it was back to the oiliy mess Got a replacement forge kit under warrenty , sent away the hose and got roose to remake it , issue i had with the first hose was it wasnt quite long enough so didnt sit right and flew off one day under boost, so this new hose and kit was fitted yesterday Hose by Jack Strathdee, on Flickr sits fine and so far (only a few hundered miles) zero leaks! But what i did notice was the amount of oil covering the hose and undertray! , it was quite a bit , more than a misting anyway! so alarm bells started ringing here is the drip thats forumed over night A by Jack Strathdee, on Flickr now its not leaking out my nice new hose , but the intercooler (not the best of photos as i touched it to see if it was oil and it was) A by Jack Strathdee, on Flickr so looks like my intercooler is split , or atleast starting to. So new intercooler time it looks like. but the oil issue will remain i just wont see it .... car is on 85000 miles and about 3k ago i replaced the breather. so thats not going to fix it Weird bit is the car doesnt smoke like the oil seals are gone in the turbo , i have attached a youtube link that shows the car on first cold start up (its about 2oc outsite just now) and then i took it for a 20 min drive and did the same revs when stationary , i cant see any smoke (other than fuel on WOT) when driving it , and nothing other than fuel apears in the 2nd part of the video ... im thinking its new turbos (or atleast reconned) and intercooler time anyone got any advice or to assure me what im about to do is right lol |

the oil in the charge pipework is normal. Its from the crankcase breather mostly, and tends to collect in the intercooler.
Why do you think the turbos are faulty? The blue smoke on startup could be bad glowplugs or iffy injectors, especially as it clears once hot. If it was a turbo, you'd expect it to get worse when hot due to the thinner oil. |

Thinking turbos solely to the amount of oil everything was covered in and the fact it's used oil , I agree with the smoke would get worse once hot , the smoke puff on start up isn't a concern to me, it doesn't smell oil'y just like diesel (it doesn't have a dpf)
No I Havnt changed the crankcase breather , only the cam cover breather vortex filter thing |

Like i say, oil in the pipework is completely normal for any turbocharged car.
You've clearly got a boost leak and thats spreading the oil around the place. A Litre of oil in 4k is nothing really, plenty cars will use that amount despite working perfectly. Is it a higher mileage car? |

Yeh but do you thing the puddle of oil from
The intercooler (the amount more than anything) is not concerning ? Considering the car is sitting still off over night. The car is on 85k so wouldn't of said it was higher mileage , it might be more 5k to 1l oil |

if you have oil then its more than likely reached its maximum on the undertray, now starting do drip off it,,could be a few things,,most likely red boost hose,,then next it could be the oil feed pipes to turbo's..biggest culprit is the little "u" shaped one ont top of engine to small turbo,,then there are 2 more,,number 3 is a pig and number 2 quite easy..have a look on realoem.com..also could be swirl flap elakage and or rocker gasket leakage,,but id start with the first 2 ive said,,,easy to check and do yourself,,although the red boost hose is fiddly.

Yeh nothing worse than someone not updating the problem page! my bad!
Turns out it was my intercooler, fitted a wagner cooler and that sorted my issue here! |
