Warranty + Maintenance : Pay for additional coverage?
Warranty + Maintenance: Pay for additional coverage?
I am purchasing a 335i coupe as in my signature and I was pondering weather purchasing additional warranty coverage is worth it… hoping for a few knowledgeable opinions… Standard warranty for this car will be: 4 years, 50,000 miles + free maintenance Available ‘extended’ warranty for $2,749 (!!) would increase that to: 6 years, 100,000 miles (free maintenance ends after 4 / 50K mark) Also Available is a wheel and tire warranty: 3 years: $495 5 years: $595 So.. Would you purchase the extended warranty and / or wheel and tire warrantee? I was wondering if anyone has had real world experience in this area. I am a fairly heavy Mileage driver that will more then likely surpass the average 12,500 miles a year… the 100K mile warranty appeals to me, however the cost is high(?)…$550 / 10K. This is not a trivial purchase to me so all additional warranty items are open game. Looking forward to any opinions. ~Frost

I was debating the same things; I put roughly 25k miles on my car each year, so yeah, the standard warranty will come and go in no time at all.
The extended warranty can be purchased at anytime during the standard warranty. I waited on purchasing this to 1. See if I am happy with the car and want to keep it once it's out of warranty; and 2. to save up some money for it. As for the wheel and tire warranty; I passed on this as well. I figure in the past 8 years of driving, I've had maybe 3 flats (knock on wood). I think my odds are against getting a flat before the tire wears out. Plus, my dealer's finance manager said it only covers wheels/tires purchased at a BMW dealership. Therefore the winter tires I throw on won't be covered, and neither will any rims I purchase in the future (unless they're actual BMW rims through the dealer).

Extended warranty for $2,749 NOT including maintenance? That's crazy. Extended warranty should never be more than $2000 for 6yrs/100kmiles. I drive 15kmiles - 20kmiles a year, so I got mine after putting 6000 miles on the car for a little <$2000 with $0 deductible from Warranty Directs. You should negotiate with the dealer to include the 6yrs/100kmiles maintenance (~$1000) for that price. Wheel warranty? Hell no since RFT sucks anyway.

I'd get the wheel warranty. Or rather, I am getting it, the $495 plan for 3 years. You see too many people here at e90post having issues with the low profile tires not getting along well with potholes. One tire replacement and it's just about paid for itself.
By the way, is there a cap on the payout for your tire and wheel warranty? I was told $2000 max payout for my 3-year term. Is it the same for 5 years?

I would not get the extended warranty. I would wait and see how the car is and if you are haveing problems you can purchase it up to the 4yrs/50k if you think you need it. Plus whop knows you may seel the car in 3 years you never know.

As to wheel and tire warranty, I think it only covers the tires you buy it for, and any replacements due to damage to those tires. If your tires will only last 25k miles, make sure the warranty will transfer to a 2nd or 3rd set of tires, and figure out the restrictions on standard wear-and-tear replacement. My dealership said $695 for 3 year warranty on the set of wheels and tires, but it was only covering the original set. I asked if they'd do it for $125, they said no, so I said no thank you. =P

I paid $975 for the ext maint program up to 100K miles and $900 for the wheel & tire insurance, plan to keep the car up to 5 yrs. It's worth it if you keep the car for a long period.

Actual Cost during the extended Maint. Period
This is my first BMW since my 2002 back before I had kids. I was wondering about the actual cost of maintenance during the extended maintenance period. It appears that BMW only pays for an oil change once a year and I would most likely need brakes during that time. Is there something I'm missing regarding scheduled maint. that would make it worth it to spend the 1100 they want to charge me? Is there a big service at 100K that would be paid for?? My 330i is scheduled to be out of production August 1st. Thanks!!

Here you go... list i got from my dealer:
All factory recommended maintenance as listed in the BMW service and warranty booklet plus below: 1. Oil changes 2. Tune ups 3. Brake Pads and Rotors 4. External Engine Drive Belts 6. Wiper Blade Inserts 7. Clutch discs and adjustements will be covered Supposedly the tune up is to occur at 30K and 60K mile, so 1 will be covered by your regular maintenance and the other will be covered by the ext maintenance. You'll probably have to replace the brakes and rotors at least twice before you reach 100K. I average about 2,400 miles a month, so for me this is a great buy. I will go through my std warranty before the 4 yrs and i keep my cars on average for 5 years. I will easily cover the 100K before that happens. I think you have to weigh your situation before you make the decision: 1. how much do you drive 2. how long do you plan on keeping the car The extended warranty and maintenance is transferable with the car I believe, so when you sell you can always charge a little more for it hope that helps Quote:

Actual cost
Thanks for the info c-lee, I plan on keeping the car for at least 5 to 6 years probably more. My car was just released for transportation to the port of exit so it's moving right along.
I had a dream last night of driving around in a parking garage trying to find a place to park where I wouldn't get my doors bashed. I just kept driving and driving and driving. I told my wife about the dream and she asked me how the car handled... Thanks again.. |

So I bought the extended warranty and the extended maintenance warranty because I've had two previous e46's and I know how much things can add up to and also because the cars nowadays don't really need much before the factory maintenance is up anyways.
My dilema now is if I mod my car, they can't help me out much anyways BBK - not covered suspension - not covered It would be nice to pay the $50 deductible and have new brakes and suspension put it |
