DPF problems......865 miles from home!

So, i'm in Austria, 865 miles from home and i've DPF issues. I'm looking for ideas for the error codes below.

I have my laptop with me, with ISTA, NCS, Tool32 and INPA installed.

I was thinking of locating some DPF cleaner to chuck in the tank, clearing all the errors codes and going for a drive.

This doesn’t go in the tank?

I have had 50/50 luck with the direct dpf cleaner solution that goes into the dpf itself.

Glow plug error will definitely stop any regen from happening.
Not sure about the throttle valve adjuster.

I suppose what you can try now is force a regen with ISTA+ while driving which i also did when it was clogged due to glow plug error.

Good idea to check if coolant reaches 90 degrees also (75 was minimum for regen).

I did chuck some Liqui Moly DPF additive ( Link to product ) into the tank beforehand going for a ride with laptop.

Glow plug error was related to the glow plug controller, not the plugs itself but worth to change all 6 plugs and controller at the same time to have equal load among plugs.

The DPF additives do seem to work. After i started using LM one (just pour into tank before filling up) it does less frequently regens.

Yes, going to see if i can find some Wynns or Redex or similiar at a garage tomorrow. Pour in tank, clear error codes, go for drive, constantly clearing the error codes, start regen.

Failing that, will have to get recovery back to UK.

I put a DPF cleaner in the tank this morning but i’ve only driven about 120 miles, so it hasn’t worked it’s way all the way through yet. I’ve another treatment for when the tank gets down to a quarter full. I’m heading home on Friday, so if the car becomes undriveable it won’t be too bad.

Had 2 glow plugs bad (controller/wiring issue) for almost a year now, and only 1 of 6 working before that...no problems with regens in 10k miles of driving.

There's a test in ISTA for the DPF. It'll give you some clues as to why it may not be regenerating.

Glow plug codes are usually the result of low coolant temps causing them to stay on all the time, however I see that in some of your freeze frames your coolant was over 106°C!

Too low of coolant temps will prevent a regen, I would assume too high of temps would as well as it generates a lot of heat. Something is amiss with your cooling system as it should hover around 88°C.

Coolant temps were about 92 yesterday.

Im curious of the throttle actuator code. Throttle plate is used for DPF regen control together with EGR. Pull that code through your ISTA and see if the description says it affects DPF regens. May be it is as simple as a failed actuator. Your coolant temps are quite high. I would monitor that. Also, you do have quite a lot of ash in the DPF probably not surprising given the mileage. But do what Mik has said and run a DPF test through ISTA too.

Here are conditions for regen (taken from here):
  • Fault codes 480A and 481A have the status "currently not present".
  • Engine temperature >75° C (normal operating temperature).
  • Exhaust-gas temperature upstream of the diesel particulate filter>240° C.
  • Sufficient fuel present (fuel reserve lamp is not lit).
  • Regeneration is aborted if the fuel reserve lamp lights up.
  • No fault code concerning air, exhaust gas, or sensors stored in the DDE.
  • A constant travelling speed above approx. approx. 38 mph; a travelling speed above approx. approx. 55
mph is ideal for regeneration. The exhaust-gas temperature increases to above 600° C.
  • Successful regeneration takes place at an exhaust-gas temperature above 500° C.

Throttle valve should categorize as air related and prevent regen. This thread also discussed Throttle valve and DPF.

Glow plug and DPF clogged connection must be related to coolant temperature then (Before i thought any error in DDE prevents regen and coincidentally had only glow plug related errors there).
In this training document page 112. Apparently there is Partial Load Heating procedure with Glow plugs to help engine reach 75 degree under certain speed/load circumstances. Based on this information i assume glow plugs compensate bad thermostat(s) and also why they (or more likely module) failed in the middle of summer.

A 2nd can of DPF cleaner helped remove the warning light. But it came on again after a few hundred miles. A blast on the autobahn cleared the warning light as well. Will read the codes again in the morning. Error 452A (DPF End of life) probably means it is time for a replacement filter or to get my current one flushed.

The throttle adjuster error has not returned after i cleared the codes after using the DPF cleaner treatment.

Booked in for Wednesday to have the DPF flushed out. At 161k miles it has done well.

This seems like impossible to me...a few months ago, I had totally clogged DPF, car was acccelerating for like 15 sec to 100 km/h (330d), thought filter was dead...then mechanics changed my glow plugs unit and DPF has cleaned itself very fast to only 7 mbar. It felt like NOS kick when I got my power back.

They told me that there is no chance for regens with a bad glow plug unit, and I think even with any of glow plugs errors but I am not sure for that.

If the fault is just a bad glow plug, then regens function as normal, as I have said and 335stoner has said. This error can be caused by bad plugs or a wiring fault, but so long as the DME just sees a glow plug fault, you're fine.

Glow plug is being sorted Monday

Glow plug replaced and DPF cleaned.

Can't find a factory figure for flow rate, so not sure if the figure below is good?
