Debating 09 or 11 335d

Hey all

Im looking at the 335d. I found 2 and would like some input please

2009 with 67k miles for 11k. 2 owner. CBU cleaned last year.
2011 with 65k miles for 15k. 1 owner but a minor front end damage reported.

They are the same color (gray) and same interior (burgundy)
What are the mechanical differences? I read they have different transmissions? Is this any thing to do with issues on the 2009? Does the 09 use DEF? I plan on doing the emmissions deletes relatively soon either way. Just want to know if there is a preference one way or another? I think i also read the power is a bit different, any truth to that? Why if its the same engine? Will both trans hold up to a mild build?

Thanks all

I have an 11 with about 118k and love it. Not sure theres any mechanical difference or power difference, but I’m sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in. I believe the 11 has an updated version of the 09s transmission, but it’s the same just internally tweaked. And the 09 definitely uses def fluid. And I can’t talk about the 09s trans holding up to mild power but my 11 is holding up good so far and I’m fully deleted. Either way I don’t think you can go wrong with both. Me personally would go for the 09 because having done cbu once, I never want to deal with it again lol. Such a mess.

Very little in the way of major differences. Some older cars had a coolant pump that would run the heater while the engine was off. Software upgrades to the ECU may have contributed to reduced CBU in later model years, but that is hypothetical. I believe there are differences in the combox setup and the stereo options changed around.

Yes egr blocked off. 3” downpipe ->3” dual exhaust -> two carven resonators.

Drivetrain same. As PW said, more perks in the 2011. I’m spoiled with the streaming audio capability of the combo. I’d get more info on the collision in the 2011. Both cars are about another 10,000 miles from needing (preventively anyaway) to change the harmonic damper. There is a thread here where many have logged at what miles their’s tore up. 75,000 miles seems to be the beginning of time when they go. My 2012 had 64k miles and I’m starting to prepare for this. Good luck with your decision.

Do the Fluidampr harmonic balancers last longer than the 75k or so that OEM units do?

I bought mine with 94k on it and It is branded as a lemon buyback. I wouldn’t think it gets worst than that and I haven’t done anything but the deletes, cbu, and regular maintenance. I bought it last January and it’s at 118k now.

Is there a specific package that is generally preferred over others? I take ut the iDrive isnt a deal breaker? Am i correct that the iDrive and navigation are part if the same package?

I personally dont like navy for a few reasons... the CIC/CCC is expensive when it fails. The screens are expensive
You have to update the nav system with new maps. Meh. As a tech that has dealt with these cars for many years
.no thanks

Checkout facebook group (North American BMW Diesel Owners). There are a few for sale right now, including an '11 m-sport with 80ishK miles, stage 4, $22k. Another deleted car showed up today with low miles, can probably be had for $15K. There are other cars in the group as well.

The 2009 has a key hole to open the trunk. Believe it or not there is no key access to the trunk in 10 or 11. Might want to make sure you get fold down rear seat on the 11. I believe that comes with the Comfort Access option.

09 and most 10's have pre-LCI paddle shifters (each paddle up/downshifts). The 11 has "pull" paddles where the right up-shifts and the left down-shifts.

The 11 and maybe some late model 10's are easier to do the rear fog light mod.

For what it's worth, cars produced after October 2010 use the upgraded aluminum driveshaft flex joint (aka guibo) found on the 335is.
