MPG up with a flick of a switch

I used to average 23ish mpg and now I'm averaging 26 and rising.

All I've done is move the gear stick over from full auto into manual.

Anyone else seen similar results?

Using the steptronic function, to keep the revs even lower? If just left in DS, the sport programmes use more fuel, as the revs are in effect 'wasted' in many conditions.

Yes - to DS then change as you see fit - If I boot it, it drops the cogs and I'm off - I then change it back into 6 myself.

Yeah, I see what you're getting at. I've always thought the standard D mode held onto gears a litte longer than it really should...

Makes no difference to my mpg when I do this, city driving sucks for fuel economy regardless of how I drive.

Noticed a big difference! Also seems to be better on the motorway in M6 rather than D!

yea i'm suprised anybody uses D really, I certainly wont!! I like the idea of using D in traffic but that's about it.

I still like auto though just because I feel like the gear changes are smoother and quicker [than me anyway], having the paddles is a must.

Yea the auto box hangs onto the revs which doesn't happen if you manually shift.

On mine, my commute is fairly boring, in traffic so i just lift my foot which normally makes the box change up or drops the revs improving the mpg.

I do exactly what briers says and I manage to change gear around 2500k especially when the car is cold. Just lift your foot slightly from the pedal around 2500k and the gearbox will change gear. I find it easier and less hassle free than using the stick.
