For my N52 'German Castrol' / Castrol EDGE 0W-30 SPT (check that it was made in germany)
-its a true synthetic unlike many oils. -its BMW long life approved so you know it meets the requirements for these engines -people seem to get good oil analysis reviews with it -its cost is comparable to other synthetics -i can buy it all day long at a local autozone or order it off amazon. -the internet machine loves it http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...&Number=718643 in the end youre going to get a ton of opinions on oil and the vast majority of what youre going to get is just an opinion. Without data out of a lab, its all just whoever's oil advertising campaign appeals to you the most. I'm too lazy to send my oil out for analysis and do a study to compare to other oils, so i went with this one that seems to have decent lab results and is bmw approved and is not ridiculously expensive. Modern oils are amazing and the car will more than likely fall apart before the engine wears out anyways. For instance, my last car was a 97 328i and it ran on dinosaur oil until 160k...at which point i switched to synthetic so i could go longer between changes. the inside of the engine was not very clean, but it ran great and did not burn enough oil at 195k on the odometer to need to be topped off in the 8,000miles i ran oil between changes. |

I don't get why people do not buy the OEM castrol oil from tischer or a local dealer. The cost of an oil change at my dealer is 79.99. Thats as much as the factory oil with filter. Literally paying 5 dollar install if even that.

Mobil 1 0w40 here also, my local Walmart finally started carrying it in 5qt jugs. At just under $5 a quart its the cheapest bmw ll-01 approved oil I can find locally.

Drive down to the states if you can, I'm lucky enough to live 30mins from the border so I go down and pick up 5qt + 1qt + 1 qt bottles of Mobil 1 0w-40 from Walmart USA for about $45 + $12 filter Mann filter from lordco. Where as I were to go to Canadian tires and pay $70 for 7qts of 5w-30

I do a full Mobil 1 change every 10,000km (6000 miles) and top up before and after tracking. For the sake of $100 twice a year I feel like I am taking best possible care of the engine. |

Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 when I get oil changes at the indy shop. Castrol Edge (Syntec) 0W30 for top ups.
As long as its BMW LL-01 you are good to go. |

Yea, I could probably do it myself for $70 like a few others here, but $25 not to deal with it and to have a loaner and get my car back clean is plenty worth it. I do believe that they retail their oil change for around $150 and then tell me that they discount it for me... I used to use Mobile 1 in everything too, but I have never been able to find anything that proves the longevity to match that of the euro blend castrol edge that the dealers use, so for similar money I decided to stick to the OEM recommendation and be safe. |

For filters, OEM (i.e. MANN) is probably the best choice out there.... Anyone used liquid moly? It is very popular in Germany when I was there, and is now available in the US.
Meets API Service SM/CF, Meets ACEA A3/B4 requirements, Meets BMW Longlife - 04 standards? Also, anyone running a magnetic oil plug in their car, experiences pro/con? |

Wow, no love at all for Shell Rotella T6 5-40. I've used this in all my turbo cars ie: WRX/STI and this 335. I'm not going to take the stand that this is the best oil period but back when I first starting using it I did some research and was satisfied that this would be a good oil to use in a turbo car that generates a lot of heat. MHO!

OEM oil/ filter, but I tried Mobil 1 ow40 for a hundred miles and hated the cold start. I live in the south and my engine seems to run/sound better with the 5w30 weight.
