E9X Reliability Data Analytics

In light of reading through countless threads and posts and seeing plenty of "reliability" type threads pop up recently, figured it may be beneficial for the forum to have some definitive data-driven metrics in terms of reliability, maintenance & repairs in regards to E9X's.

I'm thinking various reports & charts displaying the typical component failures at it's corresponding "typical" mileage. Also want to add in typical maintenance items/costs at their corresponding mileages. Think of a histogram/column chart for each type of repair, displaying the most common mileage/age for it.

It will mostly benefit those potential new owners make decisions for purchase based on typical repairs completed at proposed mileage - then ask if it has been done.

Don't want to forget about long-term owners with quite a few years under the belt - want to eventually get the same information regarding modifications. However, I'm a little undecided on what the best info to get in terms of mods is. Also, want to get information on actual maintenance costs and upkeep for those deciding on trading-in versus maintaining.

I'll be phasing this information in a few parts:
  1. Repair Items
  2. Maintenance Items
  3. Modifications

Since I'll need to build out custom forms to collect data, First I'll need the forum's members' input to help decide on which repairs items are most pertinent/important for the first phase.

Please take a moment to help isolate the most important repairs to the platform: https://docs.google.com/a/generoinve...64697634873069

Updates:
5/26 - I'll also be adding in driving style/habits into the form so we can make a correlation on this to reliability, if any exists.
5/28 - Collecting data on common repair items. Will be building forms shortly - stay tuned.

Two of us have E90 325i's that have gone past 280,000 miles. It's been my experience that most owners never keep a car to that level of mileage. My ownership has been well documented on E90 Post. That said, each car has a complete separate history from the next. While some trends can be ascertained such as WP failures, T-stat failures, VCG failures, and OFHG failures other items can be one off issues. Also, the members of this Forum represent a very small contingency of delivered E9X chassis cars.

Good luck with your endeavor.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've seen your posts in particular, which kind of inspired this idea. I've seen screenshots of your awesome maintenance log spreadsheet. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...61&postcount=9

I'm very aware there are a multitude of vehicles and engines that accompany them. In the data collection forms, i'll make sure it accounts for the vehicle and its particular nuances.

In the above preliminary form, I'm merely gathering info on which repairs to build forms for. Once I get a good subset of which repairs to build for, the data collection forms will be custom tailored to the car.

I definitely wouldn't argue that we by far are the minority in terms of overall E9X owners, but I think there's sufficient users and information here to gather some decent info and trends.

This is perfect! Thanks! If you don't mind, once the phase two forms are built, ill enter in your information.

To all, in this member's vehicle, some of the repairs apply ONLY to the N54 or N55. The next phase's forms will account for this. Basically a NA engine will not have those repairs available or applicable.

Thanks again, KiwiRD

No problem man. I bleat about the reliability of the car but looking at the list it isn't as bad as it could be. The turbos and first three injectors were done under warranty before I owned it though so that helps.

Driving style - I take it real easy 90% of the time and ALWAYS get the oil to full temp before taking it above 2,500 - 3,000 rpm. Car has no mods.

Bump for interest.

This is a really good idea, thanks for putting this together. I don't have any repair issues to speak of right now (currently at ~42k miles).
