DME warning...

Recently my car started surging and was undrivable...I was in northern WI and no dealerships anywhere. I had it towed 220 miles to my local dealership.---insurance covered it

After there inspection they said I needed a new DME and with parts and labor it was $1900.00. I had my suspicions and had tje car towed toy house.

Ran some tests and found it was a blown fuse in the ECU box, replaced and car is running perfect.....just a heads up to all!

Can you elaborate on what blown fuse you are speaking of which caused your car to surge and undrivable?

I was driving up north in tje middle of nowhere....I went WOT and heard a loud "pop" tje car immediately started surging and was undriveable.

First I checked all the fuses in the glove box and they were good...then there were 2 fuses in the ecu, both good...about the time I was ready to give up I located 5fuses packaged together in the ecu compartment....one of those 30amp fuses were shot.

Wow, 30amps would be a major amperage short for the DME. What else is on that fuse circuit?

Be sure to let the stealership know what really happened. They don't call them stealerships for nothing.

+1 There has to be something that caused the fuse to blow in the first place...30 amp fuse to blow cant be just from being an old fuse!

The fuse blowing was a fault of my own, a wire nut came off from my meth setup and shorted out. I told the stealership I had a meth setup.

(although I removed it before it was towed to them as I was trying to fix the car prior to the tow...)

Can you tell me exactly where those fuses are located in the ECU compartment. I can't find them, but maybe it's because I have an '07. Either way, currently I'm having the same issue.

335i101, I owe you a beer or something. Actually my car didn't have those five fuses in the ecu box. Under the black cap was a relay. BT tool pointed to the dme main relay. However, I know relays don't fail without warning. I found a blown 30 amp fuse behind the glove compartment. Replaced and car fired right up.

Thanks again for your quick response..def helped me get some rest before I got back to it this morning.

I have an 07' and it is located in the ecu box, more towards the center of the car, hidden under wires.....it does not look like a fuse box, u need to look closely.

Also, as noted in latter post, the blown fuse may be in your fuse box (in the glove box) depending on model.

Anyway, if u get a ton of fault codes (along with reving engine and lots of orange warning lights) and one of the fault codes is the DME main relay, check ALL 30amp fuses and this is most likely the problem.

20 cents at the store or 2k at the dealer...

My DME just went out, common for some 2007's. Dealer said it also took out all 6 injectors and coil packs.
DME code 30BB searched and found its possible bad diode
