Hi there,

Trying to help out a friend of mine. His Red BMW 1 series was in mint condition - I can testify to this having admired it for some time - but he came to me last week to tell me that his paintwork has suddenly deteriorated on two of the cars panels. The roof and the bonnet.

I've posted enhanced pics below (crappy smartphone camera). I can't work out what's caused this to happen. He hasn't been in an accident or resprayed the car since he owned it and there's been no damage from branches/animals etc.

It's almost as if the metal underneath is severely damaged and the paintwork has deteriorated to the point where it can no longer hide the defects.

I found it odd that there's a scaling type effect down the spine of the roof panel too.

Any ideas on what caused this?

you can't really tell from the pics but the damage is underneath the paintwork I.e. the paintwork is intact. The areas where it isn't intact are ones which over the last few weeks have peeled away and been exposed to the elements

I know you say you reckon it's under the paint but I can't see how it can be if it was mint before. Has it been to any hand car washes? Some of them look like sweeping lines from a gritty sponge/rag e.t.c.

I'll send the pics to a guy I know that is an automotive paint expert and see if he's seen anything like it before.

I know you're saying it seems to be 'deterioration' but I just can't see this being anything other than physical damage from a car wash as mentioned or something... Will be interesting to find out what it is...

I can see a bit of acid damage from bird shit but that's only in a small area. Most odd.

The car's not been cleaned for a while hence the bird shite but as far as I know he hasn't been taking it to hand car washes because he's a detailing enthusiast so wouldn't bother with that.

I don't really know how to describe it properly but imagine if you painted over a smooth surface to then find a crack in it, imagine the crack absorbed some of the paint but it was clearly visible...it's kind of like that. The paint hasn't been disturbed, it just seems to have been quenched into the imperfections in the metal underneath it.

Yep, even I said at first glance there's some huge circular motions which look like someone's attacked the paintwork with something...it still doesn't explained the smaller square and rectangular type scaling and the straight line "scratches" where the paint hasn't been disturbed on the outside.

Someone must have treated the bonnet and roof like a shelf or something. Dragging heavy boxes and crap along them to create such damage that needed such extensive filling.

before reading the DW thread my first thought was bad filler, strange how it would deteriorate over time. Wonder if the cold weather started it... would moisture be able to develop underneath, causing that...? I would be so pi*sed

Almost definitely been resprayed at some point. I've seen these kinds of defects on a smaller scale on older cars where a quick repaint has been carried out to get the car sold quickly. Re spray jobby. No machine Polishing or paint correction will save them deep scratches

First thing I thought too was "fuck me, that's a cowboy body repair gone bad".

Stuff like that happens when filler is put on to thick, or put on and not allowed time to full cure - or what looks in that case, both.

Resurrecting it should be ok, but my bigger concern would be why the roof & the bonnet would have filler on on them to that extent.

Hasn't been rolled has it?

The cowboy(s) in question obviously cut corners to the extent of not correcting any existing damage/scratches and probably introduced a few it could have been anything from a zipper on a hoodie top making contact (stereotype image of man with borrowed paint gun in hoodie) to when he was having an argument with his girlfriend and stretched the iPhone lead across the bonnet while straightening his benefits paperwork on the bonnet turned desk. In the process of this his fake gold bracelet and rings brushed the bonnet repeatedly. Your guess is as good as mine.

thanks for the help everyone, been a bit busy so not had time to respond.

I think he's had the car for about two years, never noticed this happen until a few weeks ago so he was devastated. he's taken it to a local bodyshop and they agreed with people on here and DW - accidented and badly resprayed. needs taking back to the metal and re-priming and respray in etc - the colour match is off too which is becoming more evident.

Not sure what he's been quoted for the work Tbh.

I have a sneaky feeling the car has been run over. The bonnet and roof were probably smothered in bondo then sanded back instead of replacing the panels.
