Castrol oil no longer ll-01 approved
As most of you guys may have already know by now but the Castro oil is no long LL-01 approved. Besides the oem oil at the dealership what other alternative oil can I use that is BMW approved? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Could be several reasons. BMW is now partnered with Shell instead of Castrol. It's likely the same exact oil and BMW just didn't pay to renew the approval. LL-14 is the newest spec, and as far as I know the only LL-14 oil readily available in the USA is straight from the dealership ($$$). |

LL-14(+) is only for certain engines. You'd be best looking for an LL-04 oil if you can't find any LL-01. |

Ah good to know, thanks! Not that I was planning on using LL-14 I just saw it as the latest standard. Non-BMW-branded LL-01 is getting harder to find, but that won't stop me from using the now unapproved Mobil 1 or Castrol.

Here's a handy little comparison tool, for comparing various oil specs:
https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html Note that it's sort of a 'rule of thumb' comparison, not actual test data comparison...but it helps you find which oil specs are similar to one another etc. |

Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 came out with a new formulation and bottle. LL-01 approved and API SN+ certified. Probably the most technologically advanced oil at this current time.

Depending on your engine you probably need LL01. Penzzoil Platinum Euro Formula (the one without the L on it) is LL01. The one with the L on it is LL04, that's not the one you want. Mobil Super Synthetic 5W-40 is brand new, and looks like it's LL01, can't find it in stores yet. There is also Motul Xcess and Xcess Gen 2, those appear to be LL01 apparently, but Xmax may not be. BMW has a partnership with Pennzoil, so I use PP Platinum Euro 5W40 LL01. Last edited by MyCar; 02-15-2020 at 09:50 AM.. |

True, LL04 is a diesel spec officially...but really it covers the same points as LL01, but is low SAPS for DPF compatibility. No harm in running a low SAPS oil in a petrol engine!
Anyhow, as you mention there are plenty LL01 oils available, and many others without BMW certification which would also be perfectly suitable...you'd just have to know what you're looking for. |
