Looking for a good wheel repair shop

I have a 3 inch lip on my rear wheels and the clear coat started to peel bad all over and theres a lot of rock chips. I called wheels of america and its 150 even if its just the lip. I was thinking either sanding it all down and using mother alum. polish or get it done professionally. Anyone know a shop thats not too expensive.

Northern IL Wheel Repair is the company I have used for wheel issues. They are cheaper than WA, but how much cheaper is relative. They are mobile, which is a plus.

Contact WSTO to get their contact info.

Yea most places I called were flat rate regardless of repairing a bend or touching up some curb rash. Re-clearing a lip shouldn't be much trouble for any shop though

I used Northern IL Wheel (Alloy wheel repair specialists) this summer for a pothole bend. I found them to be slightly more than WA. Based on the referral, I did not mind paying more or making the trek way out there. Sadly, they were not able to do much for me, and would probably go elsewhere next time around.

That's good feedback.

The question is, was anyone else able to fix your issue to your satisfaction and at what price? Or, was your issue just too far gone for any fix? What was your issue?

I'm not trying to pick on you, but as I use NIWR I am curious for future reference.

From past experience of myself and others, wheeltech does superb work in wheel straightening and refinishing. Never had a wheel welded by them! I've had my 18s on my E46 M3 refinished from curb rash and the paint match was perfect (keep in my the shadow chrome) and the surface was completely smooth. I couldn't tell which part of the wheel was previously curbed.

I know many wheel repair shops that make the wheel look great but once you're up close, you can spot the section of the wheel that was refinished, sometimes that section of the wheel is not even smoothened out properly.

Some repair limitations could lie with linea corse, in their color choice and design…. But given all these sites before and after pictures of half mangled wheels, I figured my bend (see pic below) would be an easy task. Quick sum up, hit pot hole , bent wheel. Surprisingly it rode well, so well I delayed repair for over a month. Was smooth til ~80-90 where a steering wheel vibration would begin to come in to play and intensity increase with speed.

Sadly due to the Faux rivets (boo linea corse) they did not want to bake the wheel. Bending it back without heat was also out, as the finish would likely chip and since it was a “coating”? and not paint, and they couldn’t match the color, they were unable to fix the exterior bend. He mentioned the inner lip had a bend as well, which he could straighten. I asked he repair as much as possible and balance it out as best as he could.

I was fine with this, rep wheels, my fault.. a replacement wheel would take a couple months, this could hold me off. Upon remounting the tire a small piece of ext paint had chipped at the bend. This was an awkward conversation, but all aside he offered to touch up the spot. Upon picking up I could not even tell where the chip was… why this paint could not have been used to touch up areas that might have cracked during straightening, i dunno??

After remounting the wheel, I immediately noticed the vibration was now worse, moved to vibration to lower daily used speeds ~30-40, also increasing with speed. I was getting an alignment done at VS, so had them take a shot at re-bal the wheel. They were able to balance it back to where i was prior to repair. Since then, talked to a co-worker who has had two wheels straightened (generic 20" reps with plastic rivets), paint or rivets were never addressed as a concern to him..

Mitch is a nice guy, in fact he did initially mention replacement as an option before doing the work. He is not convenient though, nearly in crystal lake. I may give my co-workers shop a go at it, but right now am just going to replace it and cut my losses.

Hoped to avoid a long rant, and tried to keep it brief....but overall feel the wheel could have been repaired but the shop didn't have the ability or desire to do so.

If anyone wants more details, PM me.
