This still blows my mind. Haven't looked at this thread in a while and it is up to nearly 20K views. Glad this has helped so many folks. I nearly thought it was too silly to even post it when I did it.

thank you for this post, my E90 has been playing up like this for 7 months. I always thought it was megabucks or just live with it.
Your post encouraged me to take a look. I managed to pull off the glass with my fingers and the rest was easy. Completely fixed in less than 15 minutes. Great post, thank you |

The fixed worked for awhile but now mine seems to be doing it again. I'm hoping I don't have to do this every 6 months, though it is easy enough. Thanks OP for the guide though!

This thread is epic! I'll be doing trying the procedure this weekend since my passenger mirror has been whacko lately. Thanks for posting the pdf!

Confirmed this worked for my E92 Pre-LCI 335i! I bought a small tube of dielectric grease at Napa for about $5. Thank you OP for the DIY Fix!!!!
Note: It's been about 4 days and no issues.

I had this issue when I got my CPO 335i in 2012.
They replaced my mirror motor under CPO (normally not covered, but after a lengthy fight they did it). Mirror has since been functioning fine (3.5 years) up until the other day. It's moving on its own after unlocking, but not all the time. So with that said, replacing the motor does not solve the root cause of this problem. Since I am out of warranty at this point I will try this procedure of cleaning the connector pins. |

Thanks to the OP for the awesome writeup! My driver & passenger mirrors both go poltergeist at least half the time I get in, and it drives me nuts.
Just did the DIY in about 10 minutes. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet (probably obvious) is that I rolled the windows down to make popping the mirror off on the car side a little easier. This is what it looks like with the mirror popped off but still hanging in place: Last edited by geek; 06-24-2016 at 06:48 PM.. Reason: add photo |

Logged in here to say thanks to OP for posting this TSB! My passenger mirror on my E60 was always pointed in a different place every time I got in the car. I was on the verge of buying an entire new assembly when I found this thread. You rock, dude!
It took me about 10 minutes start to finish. Popped off the mirror with a plastic trim tool, cleaned the pins with a pencil eraser (trick I learned working on radios in the military; those things are all put together with these aluminum pin connectors), blew out the other side with canned air, and put it back together. It's stayed put ever since. |

Awesome and thanks. Glad this has helped so many folks. Still blows my mind this was one of my only write ups and the thread is pushing 35K hits now. I always assume everyone else knows this stuff and/or would do a better job at it than me. Appreciate all the kind words from everyone.

Firstly, mad props (kids still say that, right?) to the op for this, but also to the people who recently bumped the thread. I didn't know this was a common issue. My mirrors drive me nuckin futs; they do this every day, and I thought maybe I was crazy. I'll be trying this fix on the weekend.

Just finished fixing mine. Thanks for the write up. The first few times I noticed I thought I was hitting the switch by accident. Also a good time to clean out as well.

The Fix Worked!
Thank you for posting this fix. I followed the steps as written and my driver-side mirror no longer "re-adjusts itself" when I start my car. An annoyance eliminated - free of charge! Thanks again.

This has to be the best 30min rectification ever. Easy to do, just some patience in removing the mirror lens, the rest a non event.
Thanks for the tip!!

I recently picked up a 2010 E92 M3. The first few times the driver’s side mirror re-adjusted itself, I thought I was doing something wrong. I did a search and came across this post about fixing the PHANTOM mirror. I followed the DIY and took my time. The fix was straight-forward and easy. It has been a week since I fixed it and the mirror has stayed in place.
I no longer have to re-adjust the mirror every time I get into the car. The hardest part of the fix was to clean off the connecting pins. I was hesitant to remove the glass mirror but it popped off as mentioned in the DIY. No problems. Thanks for the great write up! |

The fix worked for about 6 month
The 208 328xi developed a phantom mirror in 2017. I followed the procedure in March of 2017 and it worked on my driver's side mirror. The problem started again in October of 2017. Will do it another cleaning more carefully and post the results.

Great post. It fixed my problem with driver side. Found a wasp nest attached to backside of mirror.
