I was looking at nitto nt05r as well. I don't care about street driving since I would mount the wheels at the strip.

I'm getting the 17 x 9.5" apex arc 8 to match my 18's because the smallest NT05R is 275/40/17. A dude ran 10.7 on this tire in his E90. I'm hoping to be able to do a 1st gear launch like he does. Check out partsengine.ca as they have the Apex 10% off for black friday. The Nittos are back ordered until Feb 2020. You will have to go with something like the R888R for an 8" rim but be careful that the tire height is not too short.

Oh you're right smalled is that size. I guess that definitely doesn't fix on a 17x8 right?

The other tire I was looking at was Hoosier drag radial 2 but I don't know how much passes I can get. They have a 245/45/17. I don't want it to only last like, 20 runs.

my buddy mounted a 275/40/17 nt05r on a 17x8 wheel and they fit fine.

i had 40ish passes this year on my mt et street ss and by the looks of it i have another 40 to go ...hopefully

It's a drag radial. If you're wanting the best time, especially in a manual car. Get a good tire.

Drag radials Will be better than Street tires but will have a tendency to wheel hop in a manual. Where a slick will not, more so if it's a soft sidewall.

Ok thanks I'm just going to get the NT05R and call it a day. I'm able to find some websites with stock. Summer is not here yet so I will probably wait anyways. They seem to be more of a radial but look more like a slick so I guess what drew says it should help for wheel hop?

if you feel wheel hop better let off or you will snap an axle, the only tire that will help you out is a bias plys tire. Since you are manual trans. and will not drive to the track on these tires i will go for a bias plys tire. Google is your friend

My only concern with recommending those is that he seems fairly new to drag racing in general and bias plys with radials up front can make for a sketchy drive down the track

Especially on a manual loading and unloading every gear

That's exactly what I was finding on the subject from my research, with all the swaying. Like I am somewhat new and definitely not a expert and rather not have a higher chance to risk crashing lol.

With radials if I maybe go less hard wheel hop can be avoided or? Worst case a axle isn't to bad to do and not wallet breaking

I've never had wheel hop with the diff lock down on. I would suggest one if you don't have it. A drag radial like the NT05R may not give the traction of a bias tire but this is a good thing IMO because too much traction will break stuff on these cars. I'm going for a 17" drag radial on a proper width rim with max pressure and hoping the car will handle good...then drop the pressure to 20PSI? at the track. I didn't see anything that can touch this tire for the price. 18" drag radials are way too much.

No diff lock down. Is this what you mean? Running this would allow me to run a drag radial with less risk of breaking things on a manaul?

I fully understand now the concept of bias ply vs drag radials. I still would prefer to avoid bias ply just to err on the side of caution...

Regarding tires, I thought hooking a lot isn't really a problem but it's more about having the tire to absorb most of the energy and since a manual you have to drop clutch it drops energy harder than auto and that's why a bias ply is needed?

That said, isn't there some radial drag tires that would be more on the softer side in terms of sidewall and I could go with that instead?

Yes that's the one. There is also an adjustable clutch delay valve that I saw that's available that slowly applies the clutch when you release it on a hard launch. A guy with a 135i manual is running high 10's with this. I personally would stay away from bias ply unless you have the upgraded axles etc and also the power to take advantage of the soft side wall. You want the clutch to allow some slippage to reduce the shock to the drive train and stop the motor from bogging in a manual. The manual 335i's that I have seen run at the track didn't have these mods and were hopeless off the line - spin or bog - but ultimately needed the driver mod.

Ok thanks. I'll probably try NT05R with that lockdown kit just to experiment. I only plan on doing E85. If tires are trash and just wheel hop I will sell them and switch.

I have 17x8 kosei k1's and 275/40/17 NTO5Rs on my e92 stock suspension and have cut a low 1.7 60ft with no burnout. Launching in 2nd gear.

the diff lockdown kit will make some noise at low rpm in higher gears, just something to think about if you are sensitive to noises. I have a stock exhaust so my car is super quiet and it was definitely noticeable to the point where i took it off after a few months and im not planning to put it back on. It did not help my 60 foot or my launches. Also i never have wheel hop since its an automatic so it might help a manual, not sure.

I added a 1/4" high density rubber pad (Fabreeka from work) at the connection to the frame and it got rid of most of the noise.
