Apple iOS 4.2 Released

As an FYI...

For those folks who've been having issues with their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in their BMW, Apple released iOS 4.2 today.

I have no idea if it will fix the problems (or make more), but I know I'll be trying it tonight when I get home. Fingers crossed...

I tend to wait to update to the newest firmware.

Apple never gets it perfect with their first release. This is because Jobs doesn't do consumer testing before releasing his products/software. He waits for customer feedback and corrects it.

For example, the reception issue with the iPhone 4. However, even though people complained....did they end up returning the phone? No.

As stupid as that sounds, Apple is one of the top companies in the world....His products exceed everyone's expectations and that's why he can get away without doing consumer testing.

I 100% agree - I'm normally not an early adopter. However, since my iPhone on 4.1 skips while playing music (my brother's iPhone on 4.0.1 does not and the issue with 4.1 is well documented on Apple's own forums) I have no choice but to upgrade and hope the problem is fixed.

FWIW, it was supposed to be released the week before last, but they found a VOIP problem with golden master and pulled it. Hence the real version of the software is now 4.2.1.

True enough...but I'll just note that this IS the revised software that's intended to fix a number of the problems introduced to the field by the last version.

That said, it's generally not Apple's "style" to address issues that come from incompatibility with non-Apple devices. Users can complain all they want, but Apple's usual position is along the lines of "we make the standard that everyone else can adapt to." ... even if that change happens to be to a $50,000 car (vs. a $350 music device). I say this as a generally satisfied long-time user of Apple hardware. Frustrating for sure.

(and I learned some time ago to never upgrade Apple products until at least a couple of days after release...just to let someone else find all of the bugs)

So, let's hear from folks to see if iOS 4.2 restores iPod functions to pre-2011 BMWs. Only actual usage will tell. I'm just not holding my breath.

Today... I've had it since August!

It's a fantastic update for the iPad. iPhone, won't notice much other than print/airplay which is awesome.

iOS 4.1 on iPhones and iPod Touch (gen 2 +) devices. Skipping, device disabled, etc. If you have a classic iPod or iOS 3.2 or lower you're fine.

We've had this build for quite some time and I agree that in the past that the software has been buggy.

iOS 4.0 was the MOST BUGGY OS ever, but even the first Beta of 4.2 has been super stable.

Instant download to get your air print and air play function. If you don't care... there's not much different for the iPhone.

For the iPad - download immediately, it changes the device

Weird, I must be lucky. I have an iPhone4 I've been running without issues since 4.0... But I'm on 4.2 now. Wonder if I'll see/ hear any difference...

Installed iOS 4.2.1 on my iPhone 4 today and everything still seems to be working fine on my 2011 E92. Note I do not have 6FL.

On a random note, I'm surprised Cisco hasn't sued Apple for stealing their name...

Anyone know if 4.2 can be jailbroken yet?

Both my 3GS and iPad are jailbroken. 3GS is on 4.1 and iPad is on 3.2 I beleive.

I would really love to upgrade my iPad. iPhone not so much.

Cisco agreed to this because iOS is just for trademark only and not a competing technology. But I am sure Cisco got some $...

They did. That's how the licensing happened.

hey guys, I've got an iPhone 4, with OS 4.2 now, and every time I plug it in using the special cable, it displays this message first: "THIS ACCESSORY IS NOT OPTIMIZED FOR THIS IPHONE, You may experience noise caused by cellular interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength" and the "DISMISS" icon to press.

Do you all get that too, and just dismiss it? Or should I take it to the dealer for a software update?

Seems to charge the phone just fine.

Lastly, I take it if I wanted to listen to sat. radio via my iPhone, it can't be connected using the official cable? It doesn't let me play that (or any other online radios) thru the cable, only the iPod application.

It would help if you could state your model year and whether or not you have iDrive.

At least on prior-to-current model year cars, without iDrive, and with the iPod touch (what I have, not an iPhone) it's not possible to use the headunit to control audio from apps. You can only control the iPod (music) functions and/or the phone (if you have an iPhone, which you do). Audio from apps such as Pandora can be played to the car's speakers, but you have to first select and start the app from the iPod/iPhone's own interface, and the headunit doesn't show what's playing or allow you any control over the app (e.g., choosing stations, etc.). I believe that iDrive allows much more control ... at least on current year cars. Without iDrive, you're probably out of luck as far as this is concerned.

This is why I've given up on the 6FL interface altogether and just use AUX output from the iPod Touch (and I think the same would go for an iPhone) and control the device from its own interface.

Sorry about that. I've got a 2008 without iDrive.

I don't even care if I can't control the app thru the headunit, I'd be happy if I could just listen to it, but it seems that the only way to do that I'm guessing is by using an AUX cable, instead of the 6FL one. Even if I've launched the app on the phone, as soon as I plug in the 6FL cable, it overrides the app and shuts it down, goes into iPod mode, and starts playing the last song I played using the iPod app.

PS Do you get the "accessory is not optimized" message too? Does it really affect the phone's reception when it's plugged in?

That's what I have too...a 2008 without iDrive.

On mine, I select and start the app (e.g., Pandora) WITHOUT the 6FL cable plugged in, and then it'll play through the headunit (with "iPod" selected) just fine once I reconnect the cable. What happens though is that I lose the ability to control the iPod from its own interface and instead get the "Accessory Connected" screen. I do not regain control over the iPod until I unplug the 6FL cable. A pita for sure.

The problem may be iOS 4.2 as that error message is coming from the iPod/iPhone and not the car (obviously). I have not upgraded from iOS 3.2 for precisely this reason/possibility. Unfortunately, you can't downgrade (I don't think) the iOS on a non-jailbroken device...so you may be out of luck. Plus you'd lose features on your phone that you may like or use outside of the car.

So you're right, AUX may be the only solution for you at this point.

I'd not worry about phone signal strength issues. I personally think that Apple just puts that warning in their error messages to cover their butts and to get in a little dig at you for not using "approved" Apple devices. No doubt Steve has an iCar ready to spring on us someday soon. And everything will work just fine (i.e., fully under Apple's control) then.
