Thermostat location help

Can anyone tell me where the main thermostat is located on a 335D please?

I have had a look on realoem but I am not sure what I need to remove to just have a look?

I took my car in to a BMW specialist (used him a couple of times before for red boost pipe and actuator) and I took it there to replace the main thermostat but it was done very quick without the car going onto the ramps

I supplied him with a new BMW thermostat part which I sourced myself. I asked for the old part back and he gave me it back but I was a little confused as it was bone dry and cobwebs inside it

I checked the temperature on the way back and it was still sitting on 79/80 degrees after a 10 mile journey home

Can anyone tell me where it is located so I can have a look the new one I supplied is there?

Cant help with the location mate but Something sounds wrong here. My BMW specialist told me they are a bit of a pig to change and certainly not a quick job. Also, your temps don't sound good. I had my EGR an main stat changed and runs at 88-91 after a very quick warm up.

Not scaremongering but I don't think he even changed it. The old star should not be dry and have cobwebs in it! I would be straight back there

Just been out for a 30 mile journey including 10 miles on a mway and temp did not get past 80 degree on the mway. around town occasionally it hit 85 degrees but then went back down to 79/80 degrees as to what I originally was getting

I will definatly be phoning him on Monday but tbh I dont trust that garage and dont want to take it back there. I am certain that the stat hasnt been changed. i just need to have a look at it on the car as I made a couple of marks on the new stat

But I cant seem to locate it, so if anyone can point me in the right direction so I can check it and to see if a new one has been fitted and then I can take some pics and take it as proof

Looking from the front...

Left hand side front of engine, it's down below the EGR cooler, (long boxlike part), it is well tucked in, top left of the water pump pulley.

Radiator hose runs from bottom left hand side, (again viewed from the front) up into the main thermostat, should be easy to follow. The hose on the other side of the thermostat runs across the engine front to the right, again under the EGR cooler and has several connections to smaller hoses, including to the EGR 'stat above.

Hope that helps.

Certainly not changed in a few minutes.

This may help, as it is difficult to see with everything in place. A small mirror on a stick may help.

Garage List
I think you've been stiffed. The cobwebs give it away!

I knew I should have said something when he gave me the old part that it was dry and cobwebs inside, I will find out tommorow and give the guy a chance to rectify. I really hate confroting people (not that sort of guy) but if it is the old part still on the car how would you suggest I go about this (wording wise when speaking to him?) - Im never good with these things

Id go there and simply ask for my part and money back or threaten with trading standards. There is no reason to give the guyva chance to rectify, he clearly tried conning you.

If your assumption is right he will shit himself and do as u say

also he did not give me a reciept (stupid I know) but in the past when Ive had some work done he also did not give a reciept then. Should that make a difference with TS if he does not play ball?

Should i ring him up first or go straight there?

I been out today to have a look and imo there is no way even if he did change the stat could have got it done in 10-15 minutes. Here are some pictures I have taken with the aid of a mirror as the stat is hidden by the egr cooler (Thanks HighlandPete for your advice)

As you can see it has clearly not been touched as its still dirty, I plan on showing him printo outs of these photos -

This is the "old" thermostat he gave back to me -

At least the t*at shud have washed the stat lol, look at all the grit on the seals etc, TS would have resulted better with a receipt, just demand your money back and your part after challenging him with your evidence!

It should cost approx 40-80 quid in labour, i have no doubt lookin at pics that he has done you over

First things first, you are in the right, he is in the wrong, he is the one that should be stuttering, go there, say you checked thermostat reading and its same as before, so you checked engine bay for water leaks etc and noticed thermostat is dirty, you then looked at the old one and its got cobwebs in it, then say you are not happy and believe its not been changed., id even go as far as saying bmw gave me a part that was "marked" and it dont look like them marks are present. See what guy has to say and if need be let him hear your anger. Chances are he will say leave it with us and we will look into it, at which point they will rectify and return with a bunch of excuses, i would stay stubborn and demand money back and my part back and refusing any other resolution stating i am not interested

Any news on the outcome?

I got mine done today at a specialist and it took them almost 4 hours to do.

After reading this topic, i checked to see if the new stat is visible and it was, driving home it reached 92 degrees which it has never done and so far so good.

Hope OP gets his sorted too.

Did you supply the part? just wondering why it cost so much if that doesnt include price of the part?

I thought i would update this thread as for the past 2 days I have been trying to get my part back and did not want to write on here before a final outcome.

On Monday I went straight over after work and I spoke to the owner (whom I thought carried out the work on the Saturday). I explained as above that temp was still showing 79 degs and I had a look under the engine bay and the same part etc

His reaction was a shock when I showed him the pics of the old thermostat on the car and the "old" one he had given back to me on Saturday, which I pointed out the cobwebs/grit. He said he was very busy on the Saturday (I do back him up on this as I saw it cars were coming in left, right and centre) and he got someone in to help him to do the work and obviously "they" did not do the work. IMO I booked my car in a week ago for a Sat job and if he was going to be shorthanded, he should no have taken on more jobs on the day.

Anyway to give him his dues his immedieatly offered me the labour charge back but he said he doesnt know where my new part was and blaming the other "guy" who was meant to have worked on my car. So he said to ring back following day and if it cant be found he would get me a replacement.

Rang back the next morning, and was told he had found it, went again straight after work (20 mile trip from my work btw) and got there 4.40pm and only to see he had shut (even thought I told his receptionist that I would be there on the day to collect it)

So today I decided to go in my lunchtime today and pop in unannounced, and picked up my stat that was supposed to have been fitted on.

I am really dissapoimted with this gargae as he has a large customer base and do not understand why this has happened. was this done intentiinally or a simple mistake (I hope to think latter because he has worked well on my car before) but one thing for sure he has lost my custom as I cannot trust the garage.

Anyway thank you to everyone who advised it is much appreciated
and I will probably attempt to change the stat myself now at least I know it has been done correctly
