Back in the Bimmer fold
Hi All,
New owner of lease return 2009 335i coupe with 36k miles. It's been 18 years since my last BMW - 1973 2002tii. Needless to say things have changed a little, although grin factor in backroads remains So far I've done golf tee mod (by disconnecting the connector in trunk). I'm coming from a 2004 Audi A6 2.7T (twin turbo), so I'm familiar with modding a turbo and I just ordered BMS DCI and am considering JB4 and DP's. Looking forward to learning lots on this forum. A few (noob) questions: 1. For the HPFP recall, do you have to wait for symptoms or will it be replaced w/o symptoms at my next schedule dealer service (at 45 k miles) 2. Should I remove the DCI when I take to dealer? 3. I know catless DP's would help performance, but I won't pass smog test right? Would I then have to replace stock DP's every two years for smog test?

First off, welcome back. What kept you?
Secondly, congrats on the new car. Looks like a winner. I would start by finding a mod-friendly dealer to work with. Check the regional forums for guidance on this. There are plenty of dealerships that don't hassle customers about modifications so putting up with a dickhead service writer is not worth it. Nor is it worth removing aftermarket parts every time you go in for service. That said, buyer beware on upping the boost. A piggyback tune will cause the ECU to store shadow codes that can be seen by the dealer if push comes to shove. Many people will tell you that the dealer has no way of knowing you have a tune if you remove it, flash it back to stock or whatever but this is simply untrue. There are not a lot of issues of BMW denying claims but be informed when making decisions. As for the smog check, you will still pass so long as you get what is commonly referred to as a "DP fix", or a small device to shut down the cat efficiency code and warning light. No lights in the dash, no emissions codes from the ECU, no issues passing smog. Remember, you have a secondary cat downstream that is sufficient to pass. Enjoy the car... |

She looks good...
HPFP - the dealer will not be pro-active so you'll have to wait for signs and possibly a RED engine light. They are under a 10 yr 120,000 mile warranty. DCI - NO...you do not have to remove. I keep mine on for every dealer visit. They cannot blame your DCI for any malfunctions and if they do they have to prove it, not just stating it per the Mag Moss Act and FTC report. DPs - I believe the JB4 has a catless DP fix built into it so you are good.

I really wanted THIS car and KBB showed it was a fair price especially as CPO. 3 tires and new rear brake rotors and pads replaced as a CPO car. Car is loaded (with more than I really wanted), but I love M sport and LeMans Blue (only on M sport).
