Break Dust

We all know how bad the BMW break dust can get. It has been a few months now since my rims have been fully cleaned. I have run the car through a quick handwash place a few times but the rims only got sprayed not scrubbed clean. Am I in danger of damaging the rims if the dust remains there to long? I have been avoiding detailing her completely until I get a solution to my hard water. Any thoughts would be appreciated?

The brake dust will start to bake in to your wheels if you don't clean it off periodically. Especially if the wheels get hot. You will do more damage by not cleaning them than you would exposing them to hard water. A lot of people change out their pads for a ceramic material that produce much less dust. It will save your wheels and it's inexpensive to do. Something to consider. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't worry too much about hard water on the wheels (unless it's REALLY hard water). Clean them regularly, even if you don't clean the paint. Wipe them dry with an MF. You can even use some QD and/or PB Wheel Wax to help prevent it from building up.

I would say that the best solution for hard water is to use ONR instead of relying on traditional washing. I actually use Stoner window cleaner for a quick clean up of my wheels. QD helps make this clean up easier.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I will get on cleaning those rims early next week! I had never heard of the ONR products before. Because of my hard water I was going to have a pro polish out the sea of water spots under the Zaino polish then buy a water distiller system to prevent it in the future. However the distiller is expensive...so I have yet to do it. IF this ONR stuff works it would be an awesome alternative! Sounds scary to me though to not rinse a dirty car first...aren't you going to create hundreds of swirls!? I have watched a few video demonstrations on the stuff and if it works without scratching or swirling the paint...I'm in!

Here's a recent thread that discusses ONR a bit. I'm sure you'll find countless others by searching.

BK and others provided a lot of good info there, worth a read if you want to try ONR.

That's what I need! A scrubber like that with a handle....I already have the Zaino stuff so that would help. I will definitely look into the ONR stuff. Thx.

if your wheels are really bad, you should get yourself some meguiar's wheel brightener. if it isn't, p21s wheel gel is really expensive. it is great for those heavier jobs though.

for maintenance, you should clean and clay your wheels as best you can first. Then seal it with something like Duragloss 105 or wheel wax. It won't reduce the amount of brake dust, but it'll loosen everything when you are cleaning it.

+1
Definitely seal the wheels for easier clean up and protection. I like Collinite 845 or Finish Kare 1000P as sealants for wheels.

you don't have to get the p21s gel... i have the spray and it wasn't too expensive and works really well.
