Nope. I had buy-in to the lighting scheme first time I drove a BMW at night, around 1981 or so. It's all good Brother.

This thread made me .

FWIW, out of my little stable of cars, the Volvo matches the BMWs, while the two Brits are the other way 'round. Can't say I ever even noticed before this, nor does it matter to me in the slightest.

At least they all have proper round gauges and not the computer display nonsense that the new ones have.

Never really paid much attention to the Speedometer/Tachometer on left or right and doesn't make much of a difference to me. The one left/right thing that does drive me crazy is why are some gas fillers on the right and some on the left among different makes and models? Never understood this.

You can park closer to the pump because the driver's door is on the opposite side of the fuel door.

BMW also puts them on the passenger so you are out of the roadway if you ever need an emergency fill up.

Why do turn signal stalks push up to signal right and push down to signal left?

Why? We all have BMWs don't we? No turn signals. Come on now, you're supposed to be the expert!

Speaking of tachometers, here's a better question that's been bugging me. Why do the 2006 E90s use a slightly different font on the numbers both on the tach and on the speedometer? 2007 and later models have a different font. You can see the 2006 font in efthreeoh's photo (which doesn't show up when I quote it.) I first noticed this at the pick-and-pull yards after I sat in a 2007 328 and it took me a while to figure out why the gauge cluster looked different.

Reminds me of the E46 cluster. I prefer the later font though

Fuel doors are on the opposite side from the exhaust pipe. Having said that, it does not address what happens when the car has dual exhaust.

While that is true on some cars, it is not universal. It has a lot more to do with where the gas tank is, and where that particular manufacturer has traditionally put the filler. Most German cars have the filler on the right, most Japanese cars have them on the left.

It's always true. Check it out when you are waiting in line to pull up to the pump. I concede the point that the Germans and the Japanese do it differently, but you will notice that the exhaust is on the opposite side from the fuel filler port.

I never gave it a moment's consideration until someone told me, now I look all of the time and I have never seen an exception. The ONLY time it isn't true is when the car has dual exhaust -- exhaust on both sides as on the M3, not two exhausts next to each other as on the L6 engines.

Was it a coupe? The coupe and sedan use different fonts. It's been like that since the E46 IIRC.

Both sedans. The 06 sedans have a different font for the numbers than the 07+ sedans. I don't know about the coupes.

Except if you have a RHD one - BMW doesn't switch the fuel filler side when they switch from LHD so it's on the driver's side.

On the tach front - my wife's Hyundai is on the left, mine is obviously on the right, can't say I've had any issues driving either (or even thought this was vaguely an issue) guages in both are perfectly legible & ergonomic.

But that's not true. All normal passenger car brands ALL have the tach on the left. Go check out any normal non-sports car.

Apparently all sports cars have the tach on the right (which I didn't know) and BMW falls under that sports car category.
