Honestly I don't think the M2 no matter how light can touch the handling of the Cayman.

In Europe, our Plate type LSD's outsell our Helical as most of our customers track or drift regularly.
Are your Clutch plate type or helical LSD's also automatic 330i-friendly?

Sorry if this has been asked, it just looks as though everyone is running manual. I see this is in the NA sub forum though.

you are suggesting DIY? If so, what skill level and tools would be needed?

I don't know what specific tools you need, but BMW rear ends tend to be built in a similar way. I'd wager that you could buy enough tools to get the job done for a lot less than $700 though. Some sockets, swivel joints, torque wrench, etc..

I paid $652.11 for the install and I supplied the Redline and the two seals. While I am competent enough for many DIY repairs and upgrades I have never done a LSD so for me it was important that it be done right, and because it is my daily driver, I don't have the luxury of a lot of down time.

As a side question, does any know if the differential cover can be removed without dropping the differential (I have a 188 differential)? After being on order for 2 1/2 months my finned aluminum differential cover is supposed to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow. I got tired of waiting and not knowing if it was ever going to arrive so I moved forward with the LSD installation without it.

thanks. I'll browse my Bentley manual to get a better feel of it.

EDIT
So I browsed. Looks a little ambitious for me. I'll pass on DIY

My main concern when deciding if I was capable of doing this myself was checking backlash when installing the diff. I wasn't comfortable enough to try that on my own, especially if shims would be required.

You're not disassembling anything. I'm pretty sure it comes with the whole housing - all you do is remove & replace. I could be wrong, but they charge a core fee.

It depends on the application, in my case with the 188 differential all I got was the internal LSD, which required the differential to be disassembled and the unit to be installed. As for the backlash, it is my understanding it is not adjustable so it is whatever it is. With the 215 differential, which has the welded ring gear, you get the whole enchilada (housing and all), which is a plug and play setup.

Pretty sure backlash is set by shimming... at least that's what VAC told me when they were assembling my Quaife.

Wow, you guys are paying around $700 for the install, and that's not including oem parts etc? Are they stripping down your core, clean and inspect everything, repainting the housing etc before rebuilding it?

In my case the $650 I paid included removing and reinstalling the differential.

If you guys are able to handle the pumpkin swap yourselves, we can rebuild your unit for you for a lot less, and it's not just simply putting in the LSD; we fully recondition the whole unit so that it is like new.
