What's wrong with using contact cleaner? Done so for years with no issues...

Just did this a few days ago after following this great DIY and when I unplugged the sensor, it actually looked fairly clean but I sprayed it anyways with the cleaner and put it back in. Now my car runs smoother and doesn't have the idling issue I was having before. Can't believe this was the reason.

Does anyone know what size are the torx screws that get installed on the sensor? I lost 1 of them and had to use another different type of screw to put it back on, but it's not completely tight, so I am trying to get the same torx screws to put back on.

Don't remember toque size / 15 or 25 torx? Check out realoem should give the answers - and order one online.

you forgot to mentionot that you shound wait till the car is completely cooled*** down before you start spraying cleaner at the sensor, or else the MAF sensor will die quickly

Always best to do this sort of thing once the engine has cooled down. But based on how the MAF works, it should cool off quickly since it's job is to sense temperature change via ambient temperature and airflow, it should be fine to clean quite soon after being removed. But, since it is an expensive sensor, it makes sense to practice as much care as possible.

I think it's the T25 scree that I need.

Can I get this from Home Depot or do I need to get them from an auto parts store?

remove air intake box?

I have 2009 335ic Twin Turbo 65k miles ... and I think it’s a N54 ... want to clean the MAF but not sure where it is. Your photos look similar but I’m not sure if I have to remove the entire air intake box (filter etc) or ... is the MAF visible with air filter removed? I’m sure it hasn’t been cleaned in years. Thanks.

can be with any MAF Sensor on bimmer too ( N52 MAF )

Tools:
- torx screw (torx25)
- flat head screw driver

and a bottle of
Mass Air Flow Cleaner

Install time: 15-45min

pretty easy DIY but
BECAREFUL of the sensor - this part is expensive.
*Like any DIY this is at ur own risk members.

FIG 1: Pop those clips off the intake box
Attachment 487131

FIG 2: different angle, pop em off there are 4 clips.
then lift the lid high and pull off - put a little muscle into it.
u'll see how the back of lid locks on - just remeber that when
putting back on.
Attachment 487125

FIG 3: you want to use a mini flat head screw driver,
pull the sensor plug out. then lift the intake lid and
unscrew the 2 bolts with torx wrench.
THEN CAREFULLY wiggle off the MAF sensor - and pull it
out. DONT TOUCH the electronic insides only spray it.
Attachment 487126

FIG 4: Spray the electronics
shake off any excess juice - let it air dry.
takes a few seconds.
Attachment 487127

FIG 5: 4-10hp
if u chit is dirty it'll make a big difference.
they say clean the MAF sensor every time u change the
air filter.
Attachment 487128

FIG 6:
check to make sure the sensor is dry.
then put it all back.
Attachment 487129

congrats ur MAF Sensor is clean.
