This was a simple issue with BMW of Escondido. Last Thursday my wife told me her car was making a clicking noise. I went out to check it and it was quite bad. Called BMW and took the car in that morning. Had the car back with new lifters the next day. No questions or BS whatsoever.

I don't know if it's worth taking back to the dealership!! My car makes that rattle sound for abt 1min then it goes away !!! I also suck at arguments!! I'm not an expert, I don't know shit abt mechanics!! The only thing I can do I wa some other users here have done! Print out this thread then take from There!
The runs and drives fine! |

i havent heard of the problem existing in the 335, its a different engine. So whatever you have must be a different issue. |

Thats what I decided to do, just because I plan on keeping mine as well (2006 325xi) and I dont want some trainee or other tech. learning on my head replacement. As the other guy stated his got worse and had more issues pop up from them fixing it. I only have small stuff for them to do in a month or so. Cowl repair, pass. side door molding replaced, 60K checkup, etc.. I mention this and have them just put it on my Service Record

just to add to the discussion:
i had my lifters replaced and have yet to hear the ticking. granted i'm living in a very warm climate, and i believe it would be worse during colder weather. but for now it seems to have been fixed. i do believe i have lost a little mpg, but it could be a partial break in type situation so i will hold off worrying about it until i have a few more miles in.

Ticking, etc.
I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive me, but here's my story of the dreaded "ticking" sound:
First heard it about a year ago, roughly three months after buying the car via the CPO program (It's an '06 330i). Brought the car to Tom Bush BMW (Jacksonville, FL) and had the valve lifters replaced. Dealership was quick to take care of the issue. Ticking noise returned roughly 6 months later. Brought the car to BMW of Newport, where I now live, and was told that valve lifters are first "troubleshooting" step, followed by replacement of the cylinder head if lifter replacement didn't solve problem. Basically, the dealer told me that this is a known issue and the lifter/cylinder head replacement is the two-step process BMW is using to fix the issue. All repairs were covered by the CPO program. Both dealerships admitted that this is a recognized problem, so I'm surprised that others aren't sure how to handle the issue. Now if I coulld only get the wheels to stop squeeking... |

I hear the "ticking" also. I just started to notice it a few days ago. It's an 2010 328i xdrive with 7K miles on the clock

CPO 2008 328i Coupe purchased in South Florida. I drove back to Upstate NY in early June with no issues. Ticking started in late August a few times with 21k miles on it. I found this thread and went through all the posts. I was hopeful it was a fluke. However, not driving for a few days and the ticking noise was very pronounced. I went to the SA with audio and the SB as recommended by some here that had bad experiences (3rd BMW since 1998 working with them in the service dept. - A+ to date) as a backup. They know me well in the service department, and there was no problem at all for the issue (I did not need the audio and SB during the visit). They have done some in the past and are very familiar with the issue. The parts were in stock and scheduled an appointment to install the updated parts. I will post the progress going forward. I hope this is the end to it. The SA said that it will not cause harm if not fixed, but as I own not leased, I chose to go with the fix.

Ive got the same thing under my car almost after everytime I drive... Its like a loud clicking/popping sound every few seconds for a few minutes until its cools down. And my car is only a few months old, 2K miles... Should I be concerned?

I have read about a few E90s with well over a 100K that have not had any engine failures or major problems due to the "ticking" noise. From my own experience and from what I have read, the ticking only lasts anywhere from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes. This varies on the ambient temp and how long you are driving the car. If a car ticks for a couple of secs, I dont think there will be any long term damage. But the verdict is still out since there are so few cars over the 100K mile mark. For you to say, as a statement of fact, that there will be damage is disengenious since you do not have any emperical data available to prove your statement. |

Also, the SA said they would fix his car, therefore, I see no reason for him to lie about the issue. It would be different if the SA was trying to get out of fixing his car by telling him there are no long term effects, but he is not.

My SA is fixing it too and BMW knows that this is a know issue. First thing they noticed was that the lifter on the exhaust side (as stated in the paper work) had gone bad. Monday the cylinder will get replaced. So yes the ticking noise is not a joke.

Of course it is known, the SA at his dealer is not denying that. He said it will have no long term damage to the car. If you have data or evidence that an engine had failed, lost performance, or has been catastrophically damaged due to the "ticking" noise, I would love to see it.
