Custom gauge cluster (grey face, red leds, m3 needles, m3 rings)

Just got done customizing my e93 cluster with grey face, red leds, m3 needles, m3 rings. Pretty happy with the outcome but could probably use better face overlays and brighter leds.

Like every else says removing the stock rings without scratching the clear plastic is almost impossible. I was very careful and used masking tape but still managed to put a couple of scratches on it

Remove the resistors going to the leds for more voltage/brightness. Depending on your led spec it may be too much, you may be able to use a lower resistor.
Resistors removed and running 2 5050 smd white led in place of each amber led that was on the board for the gauges.
Yours look great btw.

Those gauge overlays are fantastic! Where did you get them from?

btw, most people don't know this but the reason why BMW went with orange is because of military spec. Orange has been proven to put less stress on the eye at night, which is why the older jets/planes used orange clusters in their cockpits.

Would u by chance now what kind of resistors are currently on there? It was kind of late and I didnt even think of that.

These are the LEDs I used, any suggestions? http://www.ebay.com/itm/111110559787

I got them here http://www.ebay.com/itm/400860373350 , however full disclosure, the oil temp range is wrong, the max on the face gauges is 300, while on my car is 340. What I really wanted to get was something like this http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=931971 but I couldnt find anybody willing to make those, one seller on eBay quoted me $45 but couldn't clarify if it was just an overlay or an actual replacement, which in ours cluster is extremely easy to do.

I actually work with US military aircraft, so far all the aircraft I have worked on or flown in actually have green lighting everywhere in the cabin, red or orange is seldom used and just to get the crew attention.

Thanks! Don't get me wrong I'm with you, white looks great but it can be harsh on the eyes at night.

I just wanted to update:

I messaged the seller you bought your grey faces from, and told him I had the 328i with the oil temp range as 120, 210, and 300. He replied that he did have those so I bought a pair. I will post again once I receive them.

Not like anyone cares or anything but I installed the overlays. They are indeed for the 328i because the oil temperatures were 120,210, and 300. I messaged the seller and told them they need to change the listing because they are mis-informing people. Here are mine installed, I like them a lot!

Looks fantastic! If they correct the oil temp reading, I will have to jump on this.

Do the new needles absorb better light? Meaning when lit is it a nice red glow or it's very dull?

Its not dull at all, if you are wondering about my custom red leds, it looks a little dim in the pic because I had a work light aimed at the cluster then, but in person they are as bright as the orange leds.

I have custom gauges (new styling) that light up white...but the needles will be lit separate with Red LEDs...I'm deciding weather to keep stock needles as they absorb good amount of light or to change to bimmian ones.

When I emailed this company, I told them they should make these over lays for the 335i and the 328i. They never responded but I hope they take my advice and make 2 different kinds. If I get a response I'll let you know.

Also you could shoot them and email and ask them personally to make you a pair and see what they say!

FYI, 120-210-300 temp range is not for 328i either (at least not 2009) - my 09' 328iX uses 160-250-340, so it must be specific to year, not car.

I retrofitted OEM M3 Gauge Cluster which has OEM gage face showing 120-210-300 as the eBay aftermarket versions into my E92, but in my case it doesn't matter as the cluster was calibrated to read correct temp.

But in the case of these aftermarket faces - if the temp range is wrong - then it is NOT reading the actual correct temp...

well, that is the temp range for my 2007 328i (120,210, and 300). I did not know the different model year 328i's had different oil temp gauges.
