Def tank removed
Here's a couple of pics of mine. We are doing the full delete, stage 2 tune, exhaust etc. I was hoping the def tanks would separate and I could use the upper tank to hold methanol for the aem injection kit. I might be able to plumb the two together and re-install them with out all the junk. I can leave it all unplugged and not worry about codes with Jarek's full tune, right?

If the car is on axle stands, two floor jacks, one in front and one in back worked a charm for me. Just have to be very careful it doesnt fall off. I even left the O2 sensor hooked up and just rotated the mufflers out of the way.

So I have decided not to put any fluid in my passive tank. Assuming the transfer module on top of the active tank is at fault for a lot of fault codes and clogging up with crystalized DEF, I am hoping that by not putting anything in the passive tank, this pump will no longer be used and therefore will no longer fail and will no longer cause fault codes and require maintenance. I don't mind filling up the car more often with DEF.

Caraudio, I grabbed a photo of yours to point to something. see red circle around filler connection.
Pulled entire length of exhaust last night. Disconnected the DEF tanks and have everything ready to come out. I have a question for caraudio1 concerning the filler connection. I noticed you removed your bumper cover. I am trying to avoid this. I want to remove all of the plumbing without disconnection the hoses from the driver side black disc thing (called filler connection). I have unscrewed fasteners to immediate left and right of the active and passive spigots. There is another screw that is real hard to get to that is further aft (keep in mind I'm working through the removable cover that is ~2.5" diameter. Here is the question: Does the filler connection get held on by three screws? I can'd get it to budge and I don't want to break it or something else. Link to filler connection in realoem. Item 13 is the part and item 5 says 3 screws. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=16_0724 Link to a real life picture from ebay auction (sorry, it showed what I'm interested in and has several views) http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-GENUINE-...3D181683998586 I looked at yozh photos and it appears he cut or removed the hoses from this part. Is there a way to get to this last screw without pulling bumper cover??? I can remove the Msport lower panel as I'm having to remove the uhaul hitch to get spare tire to fit (argh). That panel doesn't block access to this screw though. A buddy of mine is lending me a 1/4" drive extension that is sort of like a speedometer cable so it flexes. I'm going to try to get on that screw head using his cable. If that works or doesn't I will let you all know. Last edited by BB_cuda; 07-01-2015 at 01:42 PM.. |

That item 13 from your realoem link is sandwiched between the bumper cover and an item #2 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=51_5829 Have to remove the bumper cover to get to it. I have actually managed to unscrew those three screws but I could not twist, bend and slide the thing in between. Mind you I was under time pressure and cutting the hoses was the most sensible thing to do. I can remove the front bumper cover quick, but have never done the rear and did not want to try it. Hope this helps, and sorry I was offline. |

I bet it is the filler "necks" themselves that prevent slipping through the sandwich. The funny thing is i thought it was inboard of the white plastic under structure that item 2 is. Removing the clamps will be simple enough for the large hoses but the skinny vent hoses go on in further. I guess those are the ones that get "snipped". My DEF filler is getting a vasectomy I suppose.

Yozh was accurate that it wasn't possible to remove the filler connection. I cut the 2 filler hoses and vent lines as close as possible to the black disc. The black plate that supports the passive tank has studs pointing downwards with black cylindrical bases screwed on as well. The studs have a female hex in their ends. I used an allen wrench to remove the studs. The black bases have wrench flats on their sides (22 mm). I removed those as well. Only short male stud was left protruding after the above. Here is that plate after being reinstalled into trunk structure but before the studs and bases had been removed. I have follow on work to attempt to mount the spare tire to this plate. I'm shifting the info to that spare tire thread I started many months ago so as to not side track the "lost 70 lbs" spirit of this thread.

I briefly (50 miles) drove with OEM exhaust after tank removal and there wasn't a difference. After this, the open exhaust went on. Now that the spare is underneath, it would likely be a sound absorber/sound blocker.... I digress :-(

Hey guys, I need an active tank. Any of you who removed the SCR tank (Active Tank), would you like to ship your tank to me if I paid for the shipping? Provided that it is in good shape...

I'm still trying to figure out if I have a problem? Or is a problem that's good to have? The car has not asked for DEF in over 25K miles, no SES. I have not done a thing to the car, it's only been serviced at/by the dealer. It does run great!

For the guys who have done the tank delete, I just did mine last weekend but tried to keep the heat shields in place. I guess with 6 screws left, it's very hard to keep in place. I'm getting lots of vibration and banging from the exhaust.
Did you guys just get rid of the shields too?

I drilled two holes and crammed the heat shield onto the two studs on the black plate. They hold tight. The middle "hump" heat shield I made a bracket to attach to the bigger heat shield to hold still. Still haven't drove on it but it's holding still and tight
