They have it. Just out of stock.

Really a nice option. Plastic is such a dumb idea considering it's an insulator... does our trans run hot? Doesn't hurt to keep the trans temp cool though, heat kills transmissions.

Another option:

Ebay:

Bmw genuine parts:

Sucks that I already bought my plastic replacement pan lol

Well BavAuto has already taken my money for this so we will see if I get a pan in a couple of weeks.

You guys really need to contact URO to show them that there is demand for this pan so they can expedite the updates and start selling them again.

Can you link me to the filter? I see multiple models but how does one pan kit work with so many cars yet they sell different filters?

On the Drive yesterday I checked the Trans and Engine oil temps:

Trans: 174F
Engine 187F

Outside Temp: 25F
RPMs: 2000
Gear: 6th

Anytime my Trans temps get above 210F on the truck, I would change the oil. Open the drain plug, change the external oil can filter, then refill from the engine bay. All in about an hour. This ZF transmission does not have maintenance in mind.

Indeed it doesnt, but I believe thats because BMW states the transmission oil is good for the lifetime of the vehicle (for the record, I disagree with that claim).

That's with stock plastic pan?

Does the aluminum pan allow you to change the filter without pulling the pan? That would be nice not having to drop it everytime and just being able to drain it from the plug

That is with the stock plastic pan. I was taking measurements to see if anything changes with the upcoming transmission maintenance - new pan, oil, mechatronics. Trans is at 183k miles and is due for its 2nd flush. 1st flush was oil and pan/filter. This time I am replacing as much as I can. The aluminum pan is a bonus.

You will still have to pull the pan to change the filter. It is in the belly. Here is a jpeg from URO about the filter.

It all depends on how you define "lifetime". If you are BMW's preferred kind of customer, the one that buys new every 3-4 years, then the transmission and the fluid within it last long enough to not be the original owner's or BMW's (under warranty) problem. Hence: the lifetime.

Thats a valid point. But I think BMW (and Audi too) making this claim is on the same level as Tesla's marketing of autopilot, which is to say misleading at best.

Ahh. Please keep me updated on how this goes. I'll probably use the plastic pan that I purchased this time around, but purchase the aluminum pan for the next oil change. I know just how important keeping trans temps low is and I know for a fact that I'm hard on this trans lol.

an upgraded trans cooler will work way better than the pan will.

Many manufactures state a cars lifetime is 120k-150k miles, so the fluid will last at least that long. i read once that BMW expects a lifetime of around 75k, but i can not find the document i read to back that up... seeing how these cars fall apart around that time it doesn't surprise me if it actually is that low

Yes of course! The aluminum pan will be a lot better than the plastic pan at dissipating heat. Do we have an option for an upgraded trans cooler? That would be another upgrade to add to the list lol

it looks like it has slip fittings (google images).. i would imagine you could delete the line from the transmission and screw in a barbed fitting of some sort

or

if it has metal lines at some point you could cut and flare the ends and go to a rubber hose from that point to a new trans cooler..

this is all pure guess as i have only looked at two images online, but none the less getting to an aftermarket cooler shouldn't be all too hard.

No need to do any of that. The Ford guys already have compatible bolt on AN fittings ready to roll. Fab your lines and mount your cooler for the win!!!

Why is this important or beneficial? Don't our transmissions have a heat exchanger to control temperatures already?

I had my transmission and differential fluids changes 2 weeks ago, at 155,000 miles. My mechanic said the trans fluid looked like it had plenty of life left, and the differential fluid looked almost new.

Not sure about the heat exchanger, but I think the fact that the pan is aluminum is reason in itself. The idea is that the aluminum will be harder to crack in case of an unfortunate hit.

Better heat dissipation is a side benefit, IMO, even if we have a heat exchanger.

As well as the aluminum pan acting as a heat sink it also enables a replaceable filter to be used. With the plastic pan the filter is integrated and the whole pan is disposed with.

It would interesting to know if the aluminum pan holds the same amount of fluid as the plastic pan as the steel pan holds 1L less.

Having less fluid obviously has an effect on the fluid's ability to disperse heat so this might negate having an aluminum heat sink.

The fluid pick-up screen has about 100 micron filtering efficiency so it would be also interesting what the filter offered is designed for considering that this has always been a challenging engineering area because of high flow rates and low surface area.

I don't see many UOA's posted and comments such as "the fluid looked good at xxx miles/km's" really don't provide any contribution.

I would find it odd if the aluminum pan held less fluid. Depending on how much less, it might be a deal breaker for me personally. Which steel pan are you referring to that held 1L less fluid?

So rockauto says my pan shipped today this is weird because URO told me it will be months before they are available.
