I am all about PS1. Plenty of power. If I could get PS2 all done shipped with inlet for $1500, of course i would buy.
Meanwhile, PS1...Waiting for prices to drop a bit ... i think... lol Guess it's good they will be dropping PS1. Will be big sales everywhere to get rid of inventory. Added price of extra material plus hours would negate any conversions into PS2, especially with new offerings and stages coming into picture.. so... yeah... buyer's market i think.

I've found from reviewing dynos and logs that a PS1 will basically hold 30-60whp more in the 5000-7000rpm range.
Stock will peak 360-380 and taper to 300-320 by redline. PS1 will peak 400-420 and taper to 340-360. That is a pretty significant difference for <$1k and I am not looking to make 500whp. A PS2 is too much of a compromise in transient response and cost just to tune it for 400whp at 7000rpm. A stage "1.5" turbo in-between the two would be more ideal to shift the power curve a little more to the right without needing to over-drive the turbo, but that won't ever happen. Why is 400whp my magic number?... Because on a road-course it's hard to make use of much more than that with this chassis except for on the straight-away's. In the same boat as you. Really just looking for a reliable and consistent 400WHP at 7k rpm. Having the car down to around 2700# without driver plus 400 @ 7k rpm would be a dream on the road course. |

Looks like a PS2 is the way to go. I found a few logs of 93 octane and relatively conservative (like 18psi or 60%wgdc) making around 420whp/450wtq. Should help keep iats down too since you don't have to over spin the ps2 to make it.

For a bunch of us, PS1 is the way to go.
(because 1.5 is not existent hehe) I am personally looking for upcoming sales events, to see what kind of deals we can get. Want to package i pipe, dv upgrade and ps1. Or maybe we should start a new group buy?

For me I am FBO, and the next step in either the PS1 or PS2. As mentioned, I highly doubt pure will be discontinuing the stage 1 for the n55. As well, I highly doubt there will be any deals on these as the markup isn't as big as the PS2. I am in the same boat as many others in this group, flip flopping back and forth between the two. For the price of the stage 2, and the cost of a custom tune, it is out of my price range of what I can afford and willing to spend. For me, I can bolt on the stage 1 myself, and be done with it. As well, with our turbos being PWG, stage 1 is worth the upgrade I feel. I placed my order to purchase a stage 1, it will take a couple weeks to come in, and once installed, I will keep you all posted on my thoughts of the upgrade.

All Pure does is bore out the turbo cover and slap in a 67mm wheel. It's all profit for them, basically. You can have a local turbo builder do this work on a CNC machine and have your own DIY PS1 for <$650. There is plenty of profit on the PS1 for Pure which is why it probably won't go away any time soon. It's not like they even need to keep an expensive inventory of assets to do the work (you're giving them your turbo)... all they need on hand is a rebuild kit and wheels which they probably cut on their own CNC machine... I think PS1 is actually pretty over-priced for what it is. That $600-700 mark is much more appealing for what the PS1 is.

I'd be very surprised if Pure cuts their own wheels. I'm an engineer at a 5 axis milling company that makes compressor wheels for Cummins, Borg Warner, Honeywell, Blouch, etc. Even with years of experience maintaining consistency on small wheels is difficult. Also the profit margins for the manufacturing company alone are insane, especially for small orders (which Pure would be). However that's not to say the stage 1 doesn't have a large markup.

maddmatth,
What wheel did you use? How much did it end up costing? Any issues please?

http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/58791-n55-turbo-upgrade/ In USD he charged me about $500. Running it for a year now, stage 2+ tune. Still haven't got a custom tune so I'm probably not taking full advantage of it currently. |

For sure, the PS1 is a great upgrade over stock and have had no issues running it the past 2 years. I’ve been getting the itch lately to upgrade to PS2 though. Want to make similiar power, but not max out turbo like the PS1 currently is

Justin at TwistedTuning has been working on a new E30 tune for my new motor and turbo. I picked up a Kinugawa unit. It's similar to the PS1 but it uses all new components rather than Pure using rebuilt and bored out stock cores. I paid less than a PS1 and there is no core.
There is a solid 30-40whp gain at 4000+: https://datazap.me/u/banks334/11-20-...og=1&data=4-16 3.15 M3 gearing 5" intercooler Stock intake DV+ Catless DP Not much else to mention power mod wise... Last edited by bbnks2; 11-26-2018 at 07:31 AM.. |
