OFHG gasket DIY question

I'm currently in the process of doing the job and I'm stumped at the E10 bolt to the bottom left of the housing that's blocked by the coolant hose with a plastic flange.

I tried using my 8MM wrench on the bolt as appareantly the hose breaks if you remove it and the bolt won't budge and don't want to risk stripping.

So I want to use my E10 socket but for the hose, does it ALWAYS break of or sometimes it won't?

Car is 2011 with 56k miles.

Man shoulda picked one up they're 25$ on FCP euro when I picked up order in USA. BMW dealer here in Canada; 80$, NAPA 76$. Arghhh thought I could get it with the 8MM but man the bolt is on so tight, tried using pen fluid.

I used a 8mm on that last bolt on the front too. Didn't have to remove any other coolant hoses other than the big one to the right that connects directly to the OFH.

OFHG = Oil Filter Housing Gasket.

If you don't know what that is and you own a 335i, you're gonna be in for lots of surprises. Btw you still go to PSU?

You got lucky, and the fear is justified...it's the reason the part linked below exists.

just went through this dilemma ended up stripping it cause it was on good due to oxidation or it was over torqued it just was not coming off . Not a big deal got the Dremel out and cut the head of the bolt clean took about 40 min but did work. Key is to cut in increments then chip off and continue so until the head is off worked like a charm

Garage List
Save that bolt for last and use an 8mm ratcheting wrench to undo the bolt while pulling the oil filter housing away for clearance. If the 8mm feels like stripping then get an E10 ratcheting wrench.

The above - using this https://www.amazon.com/s?url=search-...cheting+Wrench

When putting the housing back on, I put the hidden bolt in the housing, line up the housing, and get the hidden bolt started with my fingers, then I tighten the front bolt, while moving the housing closer to the block. After lightly snugging the front bolt, I go back and snug the other bolts, then once all are snug, I torque them.

I've done my OFHG twice on my N52. Both times the hoses had well over 100,000 (I replaced hoses in between OFHG changes). Never had a problem.

agreed with the above comments, you need the e10 open wrench to get at that last bolt. if you want to remove it as cleanly as possible

I haven't done this job yet but my cousin has as well as the water pump. I always feel a bit uneasy when jobs can disable the vehicle, but also am often amazed once completed, that it wasn't quite as "scary" as it could have been. I crack myself up with the ABS pump job because normally I want to know it worked out asap, and that one took weeks to know everything was fine. YouTube is a great friend to the diy'er
