nearly wrote the M off Today

As above had the fright of my like Today ,thought I would take the M for a spin for a change ,giving it some beans round a bend and all of a sudden it felt really lose and I mean really lose was doing about 60mph at the time ,all the dash lights flashing at the same time ,my stabilty control tyre pressure etc etc ,anyway managed to correct the thing and pull over suspected puncture /blowout anyway got out the car took a minute to calm down a bit checked the tyres and nothing no puncture or anything else so got back in and started to drive off ,Bloody hell all over the place again lights flashing etc

Crawled Home at about 10 mph so embarassed to say the least ,called BMW services hour later Guy came to the house as confused as me until he looked under the car with his torch

Collapsed rear arm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this for real nearly bloody killed me anyone else had this?

Not happy £40k car only driven it for 500 miles tops.

going in to the dealers in the morning on a recovery truck ,here we go again BMW had better get this sorted fast without any issues or it will be the last Bmw I ever own , after the problem with the 335i and them having the car for 3 weeks due to turbo failure I will not be happy if they mess me around this time.

even at 12k thats shockng, i wouldnt expect it to do that for god sake. I would certainly press the matter with the dealers and get some servicing off them or something thats just not on.

Yep its going to Soper Bmw as they are the nearest to me and I have always bought my cars from them except the M that came from Sytner

How the hell can this arm collapse?

The tech showed it to me and its well bad you can even see the rear wheel sloping .

Makes you wonder what else might show up on the car. Are you absolutely certain it wasn't in a collision with the previous owner?

If I was you I'd insist on seeing the broken arm, and an explanation of how they think it has broken. Then post some pics and get some other opinions. Is it the Alu arm that has cracked/snapped, or an issue where the bushes etc. join the chassis?

Speculating, but it sounds like some specific damage to the arm causing it to fail - if you didn't do it, it begs the question as to whether it was damaged when you bought it. If its not been damaged, then'd you'd have to conclude it must be a manufacturing defect - which is a bit of a worry.

Was it an AUC car?

Thats what is worrying me ,surely they can't blame me for it as I was only driving the bloody thing ,I wouldn't mind if I used it every day but I have hardly used it since buying it in May.

Its hard to tell from the photos whether this component is one of the lowest parts of the car - is it?

It looks like a pressed steel part (I assumed it would be a cast alu part) - which has failed at a point where the weight saving cut outs leads to a weak point - any impact damage at this point could have significantly weakened the part by creating stress raisers - but its hard to tell if it had any impact damage prior to its failure from the shots.

It is interesting that the ribbing of the part (along its top edge) stops for the middle portion - making it substantially weaker where it had failed.

I'd insist on retaining the part once they've removed it, and have it properly looked at - you should be able to tell if it had been damaged prior to failure (scratches etc. near but not related to the failure cracks).

when you look at the other side the arm is high up to the boot floor so it would be hard to be impact damage also as the tech guy said to me impact damage would have bent it upwards or sidesways and this has collapsed downwards, looks like fatigue?

OOHHH FAAWWKK...

"giving it some beans round a bend "

you must've done some CRAZY DRIFTIN' or runnin' from the cops to cause that thing to do something like that...

but tahts not too unbelievable as to why it would happen since taht whole arm looks damn hollow. It just looks like a U-shaped stamped steel. like this: |___| and with holes in the middle underneath. I'm pretty sure mechanical and structure engineers can tell that it isn't a particularly strong part and may be designed this way to take some flex load.
Otherwise, why didn't they make it a single piece (non-holes), fully hollowed arm.

Wow. Thank God you're OK for starters.

What a f***ing disgrace. Coming from someone who is wanting to buy, what I think is an example of the pinnacle of what BMW offer, in the future.

Interested to see what BMW make of this. Hope it gets sorted ASAP with the minimum amount of fuss. How the f*** does something like this happen to a car that's barely driven?!

Pics resized:

Good luck Mike with getting it sorted. Keep us posted.
