Very nicely done DIY write up. No how about posting up a link to that video of your stupid-funny *LOUD* bad ass three inch exhaust you tested prior to the install . My surround sound stereo is waiting |

From what I have seen, I think paying the 250 or so to get it installed would be better than the pain and aggravation...This has to be one of the harder installs that I have seen..I know for sure if i got the DP's I would go that route...

I'm going to fill in some things that weren't 100% clear to me when just reading through until getting underneath.
Step 7, undo the 16mm and reverse Torx which is on the steering mount. This isn't the rubber hose line bracket. I didn't understand the pictures until I realized this part of it. So anyone who is skimming the guide before hand, the reverse torx(E12) is just a multi-point 10mm socket with a 16mm wrench or ratchet on the back. Hold the 16mm firm, and turn the 10mm on the bottom. Also, I had a problem removing the rubber bracket because it would spin with the nut. I just used vice grips to grab right above the nut since there is a hex piece that is barely gripable to hold it steady while you remove the nut. I found step 9 to be bad advice for me. Trying to get a ratchet or driver was near impossible this way. Pull the steering rack to the back of the car and stick a ratchet in there over the steering rack from the front of the car. If your fore arm is as scrawny as mine = 100x easier. Hope this insight I'm giving as I do this helps somebody.

Excellent!
Used this DIY to get my local mechanic to change the downpipes and he did it step by step in about 2 hours. Cost = $200 :P. There were a couple of hangups due to us missing a step and having to undo some things and getting the clamps on the turbo pipe was a bit of a hassle but everything worked out. I can easily do it again now if I have to go through warranty work.

Just spent a couple of hours working my way down to the last two bolts. This install is fairly straight forward on a car with 5000 miles but on my 335i with over 70,000 it a serious pain in the a$$. I snapped two bolts (exhaust hanger and one of the four mounting the downs to the rest of the exhaust). Also, while I can get a 1/4 inch drive wrench on one of the hanger and the last mounting bolt, there's NO WAY that I can get enough torque on the thing to get them loose (or snap them as the trend seems). I'm now going to button everything back up and take the whole mess to someone with the requisite time, tools, and knowlege to finish the job!

I might recommend removing the front sway bar if your steering rack is hitting this. I have the M3 front sway so I don't know how it would compare to standard ones but removing it completely only takes about 15 min and I found the space it buys to be invaluable. You can still only get 1 hand at a time up there but having a place to shine a light helps a lot.
If you've never removed it before be sure to re torque it to 15-1/2 ft lbs putting pit back on Last edited by BTM; 11-21-2010 at 10:35 PM.. |

Is there any way moving the steering rack will mess up your alignment? After getting my car all back together, it seems to pull to the right more significantly (which before it did slightly)
