I would recommend a different engine support, the one I bought was a $99 one from Amazon but on a BMW you need one with tall legs, I should have ordered the Schwaben Engine Bar from ECS tuning, I ended up having to put wooden blocks under the Amazon one to get it up high enough.

Another data point to add. No leaks but did it for preventative measures. Shoutout to the forum and this DIY in particular for providing very good guidelines.

I used an E10 1/4" socket for two of the bolts and an 8mm ratcheting wrench for the one near fan. Only 48,000 miles, so not much cleaning to do. In all took longer to jack car (for coolant change) and prep work space than to clean and replace the gasket. Note: though I did suck the housing dry I still somehow managed to get oil on the block. Some before and after pictures for reference. Cheers.

Hey Guys. I’m reading up on this DIY and checked mine out, definitely leaking.
While cleaning it up I noticed the large threaded port on block (seen above in picture 1 & 2 of Chuckjl post). What is that threaded hole for?

Should I be concerned if nothing there now???

I believe that is for manufacturing the engine or the vehicle. They need to design and use safe points for lifting the engine around the assembly lines and this likely would have a eye-bolt installed to attach chains. It is supposed to be 'Empty.'

Getting ready to replace both of these gaskets. I didn't think about it beforehand but I JUST change the oil less than 50 miles ago. Is an oil change required after? Worried about cross-contamination.

More of a chance of oil getting into coolant than coolant into oil as long as you drain a little coolant. You def need to remove the oil filter and suck out any oil in the oil filter housing or tons of oil is going to be everywhere and probably into the coolant port unless you block it before hand.

It's helpful to drain a little coolant out of the radiator even though it is annoying. You can then disconnect the hose going to the OFH which will allow you to more easily remove the part without oil and coolant dripping everywhere. Don't forget to cover the accessory belt.
Refilling coolant does not take long and the electronic bleed procedure is easy.

And then yes, removing and sucking out some of the oil in the Oil filter housing will help too. Remove the filter, let it drip out, then suck out the remaining oil in the housing.

It sure seems that way. Mine looked exactly the same and the only coolant it's EVER had was BMW OEM coolant... and yes it had even been changed about every 5-6 years.

Question for you guys... I noticed when I had my manifold off that there was a lot of oily gunk in the valley/area below the head gasket. I have a leaky OFHG that I'm getting ready to replace (and it's not the first time). I'm guessing that's a plausible source?

OFHG and valve cover gaskets are likely sources for the oil
