This year’s dual emergence is a once-in-a-lifetime event. While any given 13-year brood and 17-year brood can occasionally emerge at the same time, each specific pair will see their cycles aligned only once every 221 years. What’s more, this year’s cicada groups, known as Brood XIII and Brood XIX, happened to make their homes adjacent to one another, with a narrow overlap in central Illinois.

That is so funny you said that. In Texas we have locusts every year and when I was a kid I used to shoot them out of the trees all the time. And I was quite good at it!! btw, you usually have to hit them three or four times before they come down.


Here is Chicagoland they are saying we are going to be ground zero.

I grew up in AZ, and there is no shortage of cicada here, either. I haven’t gone shooting bugs since probably 1990, but Daisy is ready. Maybe I will pull her out tomorrow. Anyway, that’s the thought that came to mind. Blast away man! Good luck!

I am right next to Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park in Chicago. Maybe this summer I will go out to Lincoln Park and shoot them out of the trees. Can you imagine the reaction of Chicagoans seeing some guy in Lincoln Park with a rifle shooting into the trees?! They would absolutely lose their ever loving minds!!!

Had them in Cincinnati a few years ago and it was the worst. Couldn't even enjoy the outdoors without getting attacked by 10-20 of them. Thinking about mowing your grass or getting the trimmer out...nope. Don't do it. I had hundreds attacking me when I was cutting the grass. Not fun at all. Had to run with the lawnmower to get the grass cut.
