Make sure the filename of the ipo file is the same as the bold text. If you added both the ipo files then add 2 lines and see which one works.

I did the rename, extracted, renamed, copied to correct folder. up to the e90 part. dont understand what to do with e90.eng.

sorry for being such a rookie!!!!!! but we're almost there!

Thanks for your help

edit - ran a search for e90.eng. Added the text under the [ROOT_MOTOR]
DESCRIPTION=Engine section as shown in the pic. haven't had a chance to test it out yet.
does it look okay? or do I need to change anything before it works as it should?

so without trying it out whilst plugged into the car yet, I've 100% done something wrong because when I go to e90 then engine there's no N55 option so you got further than I did EB!!!!

Read the instructions again and add the full lines:

ENTRY= Mevd176k,Mevd 176k for N55

First part of the entry is the ipo file to look at, after the comma is a description that will show up in the inpa menu that you click on. Otherwise with no description itll just be blank in INPA

Its for a different version of the N55 you'll need to try the other one if the first one doesnt work

so I did what you said. the only thing I added into the e90.eng file is copying and pasting what you just wrote in post above.

this is what comes up when I double click into N55

note all of this was not connected to the car. I'm at work now, but clearly am not being productive lol

I don't know how this could work without being connected.

FYI I read a post and to find with IPO to use, put your VIN into realoem.com

Go to Engine Electrical System

You will see both there as options, but when you click each one, only the one you have will show parts, the other is empty.

My car shows as 172

172 for me on real oem.

Did 172 work for you?

I was never trying to actually read the codes without being connected, but expected an error like no car found or something like that as opposed to the one I posted earlier.

Tried both 176 and 172. Same error as in the last pic I uploaded. The program terminated blah blah blah.

Any other ideas on how to pull the detailed error info from inpa?

I havnt tried again, you get a memory error which is different to my error, you are also running on windows 10 and not in a windows 7 virtual machine like I am.

Where did you get the installer?

How much RAM does your Laptop have?

Installer is from joe @ top gear solutions. He's already flashed ppk with the software and my laptop. Not sure how much ram I've got off the top of my head, but surely it's plenty. It's my work laptop. All my personal stuff is Apple.

I replace my boost solenoid and vacuum lines. Not sure which was the fix (did it sinultaneously) but it fixed it straight up. Good idea to do both anyway. Bought from fcpeuro

If you're in Sydney pm me for the mechanic who did mine. He's great and knows exactly what to do as he's already done it before.
