How much power are you running with your 335is clutch kit? Also smfw noise?

So im getting the normal mixed answers(shocker lol), ive got some saying they hold tons of power and others say they burn up fast, and then i even got told to go with a twin disc setup. Anyhow, thinking about going with the act 24# smfw, and a 335is clutch kit form luk. I will be upgrading from the stock turbos to a set of 17ts, and will run them as far as pump will take me and probably run e at some point. So realistically ill be in the 550 whp at my peak of goal. Will the 335is clutch handle this power? Also Right now i hate the drone i get at highway speeds 65-80mph from my exhaust, but i really dont want to add any extra noise. What is the sound that i keep hearing that single mass flywheels cause while in the 2200-3k range? Is this an actual noteable thing? Or is it people being really sensitive to sounds they havent heard before?

thanks for the help!

I remember clearly someone put vtt stage 2 turbos on 3 or 4 years ago and got an e40 map and fried his new 550i clutch during tuning it.

They only hold a bit more then stock

Single mass flywheels are noisy.

I'm on 17t turbos 22PSI, dyno'd 480whp and 492wtq on roughly 95 octane and so far the clutch is fine 8k miles on it. I have the 335is clutch and tuner lightweight SMFW. I do drive spiritedly, but I do not rag on the car hard often. The SMFW will induce some NVH, usually at idle but I just raised the idle up to 950. At speed it's not to noticeable until you upgrade the tranny mounts.

Have you already upgraded your trans mounts? I have revshift engine and trans mounts, and already had to raise the rpm to 950....Still vibrates. Want the SMFW, am willing to have some more noise, but not really any more from the point im already at if that makes sense.

Yes, I originally had ECS polyurethane 70A durometer and it was loud as fuck. It was unbearable on long drives, I have since switched to solid rubber by 034 motorsports. I had the SMFW on stock mounts and I'd say on poly's it was easily a 100% increase in NVH, on solid rubber it was a modest 10%.

OP if I were you and looking to make 550whp, I would just get an sprung act clutch with matching flywheel.

ok, so i guess the question is what is the recommended clutch then? I hate the fact that twin discs and smfw, and a good clutch seem to run right next to eachother in price. I really dont understand that in the slightest.

I'd say this kit should be good, the flywheel is not as light as Mfactory or Tuner, but that will help with NVH. If your really worried you can also go the next stage up, but the pedal will definitely be a bit heavy.

Additionally I forgot to mention, I have power limited on 1st and 2nd through MHD and with my custom tune I shifted the power curve a bit to the right, so that I don't have a ton of torque at low RPM's. This helps with preserving drivetrain components from the clutch to the axel shaft, which can be prone to snapping under high torque situations. Also goes without saying do not lug the engine/go WOT at low RPM's in higher gears.

Is this going to be enough for my goal of 550whp?

It goes without saying that just because someone can manage to fry a clutch doesn't mean the clutch wasn't up to the task. It often says more about the driver than anything. Lots of people have had long-term success with the 335is/550i clutch and ~500whp. After all, the 550i weighs over 4300lbs and makes 480lb-ft of torque from the factory.

The 335is clutch was a significant upgrade for my xi. I'm making a little over 500whp and 485lb-ft right now with 16T's. Launching is still pretty tricky (albeit less tricky now), but my stock clutch couldn't handle NLS and the new one does great with it.

This stage would probably be more than enough

You can always contact manufactures and see what they recommend, Act, south bend, or Spec are all good brands.
