California Smog Test

Having recently moved to CA from OR, I went to have my emissions test done here in El Dorado County. Like a dope I forgot to remove my JBD before going, so I failed because it was "Tampered".

Some other relevant data for your consideration. I am wondering if it would have failed anyway. I did have a recurring 4C04 code lurking without SES before the test, but I had cleared it. It had been there before. I am wondering if it automatically shows monitors "NOT READY" if the tech enters Tampered in the system. It had the following monitors not ready, and it would interesting to know if they recur after I remove the JBD and go back in.

- Fuel System
- NOx/SCR Aftertreatment
- Exhaust Gas Sensor
- EGR and/or VVT System
- NMHC Catalyst
- Boost Pressure System
- PM Filter

Given the rather benign nature of the JBD, I am going to guess that I will fail the test even without the JBD. Assuming I get another piece of paper from the tester that doesn't show tampered, I can go to the dealer and get things fixed under warranty I hope.

Any thoughts other than "you dummy"?

All of those should set after a few drive cycles, they are posted somewhere around here. The NMHC catalyst takes forever to set!

Were you so used to moving that you decided to move every year while retired as well?

I'd drive maybe 150 miles to get everything set.

When you reset the codes all monitors get reset. You have to drive for a while through various driving scenarios to set the monitors

I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but I finally maybe possibly understand what you meant by clearing the codes and resetting the monitors. To play back my understanding. The fact that I cleared a code 30 minutes before and 2 miles away from the smog station means that I was doomed to failure the moment that I pushed the clear code button. That's why all 7 monitors failed. Looks like I've got a lot of driving to do before the next test.

There should be no CEL.
Some of the monitors (up to two I believe) can be "not ready"

Final update:
1. Removed the JBD.
2. Made an attempt to execute the driving cycle in preparation for the retest.
3. Retested and passed. Two of the 7 monitors were not ready. You are allowed two.
4. It was noted on my test sheet that I had been advised to get a CARB compliant "programmer."
5. Now have CA plates.
